La Liga was founded in 1929 as the Primera Division, replacing the previous Copa del Rey as Spain's primary football competition. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) established the new league to create a more professional and competitive national football championship. The inaugural season featured 10 teams, with FC Barcelona winning the first title.
The league faced significant disruption during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), which halted competition for three seasons. Following the war, La Liga resumed under the Franco dictatorship, which used football as a tool for national unity and propaganda.
The post-war decades saw Real Madrid emerge as the dominant force in Spanish and European football. Under the presidency of Santiago Bernabeu and with players including Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas, Real Madrid won five consecutive European Cups (1956-1960), establishing themselves as the world's most prestigious club.
FC Barcelona emerged as Real Madrid's primary rival, and the El Clasico fixture between the two clubs became one of the most watched sporting events in the world. The rivalry took on political dimensions, with Barcelona representing Catalan identity and Real Madrid associated with the central Spanish state.
La Liga expanded to 18 teams in the 1970s and to 20 teams in 1997, creating the current format. The league adopted a promotion and relegation system, with the bottom three clubs relegated to the Segunda Division each season and replaced by the top three clubs from the second tier.
The 1990s and 2000s brought a new era of global superstars to La Liga. Real Madrid's Galacticos policy, which brought players including Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, and others to the club, generated enormous global media attention. Barcelona's partnership with Johan Cruyff and later Pep Guardiola produced some of the most celebrated football in history, including the 2008-12 era featuring Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta.
Lionel Messi's career at Barcelona (2004-2021) transformed La Liga into arguably the world's most watched football league. Messi won 10 La Liga titles with Barcelona and became the competition's all-time leading scorer. His departure to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 due to Barcelona's financial difficulties marked the end of an era.
Under Javier Tebas's leadership since 2013, La Liga has pursued aggressive international expansion, establishing offices in major markets and negotiating broadcasting deals with partners in more than 180 countries. The league has also implemented the LaLiga Economic Control system, which monitors clubs' financial sustainability.
In the 2023-24 season, Real Madrid won the La Liga title, their 36th championship. Real Madrid also won the UEFA Champions League that season, completing a domestic and European double.
