History of Hyundai Motor Group
Hyundai Motor Group traces its origins to Hyundai Motor Company, founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung as part of the broader Hyundai chaebol. Chung Ju-yung had founded Hyundai Engineering and Construction in 1947, and the motor company was established to enter the rapidly growing automotive industry.
Hyundai Motor Company began automobile production in 1968 with the Cortina, produced under license from Ford Motor Company. The company developed its first proprietary model, the Hyundai Pony, in 1975 with design assistance from Giorgetto Giugiaro and engineering support from Mitsubishi. The Pony was the first Korean-designed automobile.
Hyundai began exporting vehicles to Canada in 1983 and to the United States in 1986. The Hyundai Excel became one of the best-selling import cars in the US in its first year, though the brand later struggled with quality perceptions in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Hyundai Motor Company acquired Kia Motors in 1998 during the Asian financial crisis, when Kia had filed for bankruptcy. This acquisition created the foundation for the modern Hyundai Motor Group and gave the group a second major automotive brand.
Under Chung Mong-koo (son of founder Chung Ju-yung), who became chairman in 1999, Hyundai Motor Group undertook a dramatic quality improvement program. The group introduced its industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile warranty in the United States in 1998, which helped rebuild consumer confidence. By the 2010s, Hyundai and Kia were consistently ranked among the most reliable automotive brands in consumer surveys.
