Huawei is entirely owned by its employees through a virtual share ownership plan. As of December 31, 2024, approximately 161,749 current and retired employees participated in the plan. Founder Ren Zhengfei holds approximately 0.65% of shares. There are no external investors, public shareholders, or government ownership.

Is Huawei publicly traded?
No, Huawei is not publicly traded on any stock exchange. The company is privately held by its employees and voluntarily publishes annual reports audited by KPMG but is not subject to public market disclosure requirements.

In FY2025, Huawei reported revenue of CNY 880.9 billion (approximately $126 billion USD), up 2.2% from FY2024. Net profit was CNY 68 billion (approximately $9.7 billion USD). The company invested CNY 192.3 billion in R&D in FY2025, representing 21.8% of revenue.

Why is Huawei banned in some countries?
The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Sweden, and other countries have banned or restricted Huawei telecommunications equipment from their 5G networks, citing national security concerns about potential Chinese government access to network infrastructure. Huawei denies these allegations. The U.S. also placed Huawei on the Entity List in 2019, restricting American companies from selling technology to Huawei.

Who founded Huawei?
Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former People's Liberation Army officer, in Shenzhen, China. Ren started the company with approximately CNY 21,000 in capital as a reseller of telephone switches and built it into the world's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer over nearly four decades.

What is HarmonyOS?
HarmonyOS is Huawei's proprietary operating system, developed as an alternative to Android following the U.S. restrictions that cut off Huawei's access to Google Mobile Services. HarmonyOS runs on Huawei smartphones, tablets, wearables, and smart home devices and continues to expand its ecosystem.

What is the LogicFolding chip technology?
In May 2026, Huawei announced a new chip design approach called LogicFolding, which folds traditional 2D circuits into 3D vertical structures to increase power efficiency without requiring advanced EUV lithography machines that China cannot access. Huawei claims the technology could deliver capabilities equivalent to 1.4-nanometer process technology by 2031. The first Kirin chip using LogicFolding is planned for the Mate 90 smartphone series in fall 2026.
