History of Farmers Insurance Group of Companies
Thomas E. Leavey and John C. Tyler founded the Farmers Automobile Inter-Insurance Exchange in Los Angeles in 1928, initially insuring farmers and rural drivers at better rates than city-based competitors offered. The reciprocal exchange structure, in which policyholders mutually insure each other through an attorney-in-fact, has remained the ownership model since.
The company expanded from auto into homeowners, life, and commercial lines through the mid-twentieth century, building a national agency force and becoming one of the largest insurers in the West. The Farmers name became synonymous with its exclusive agent distribution, agents who sell only Farmers products rather than shopping across carriers.
Corporate ownership of the management company changed hands several times: BATUS acquired the group in 1988, Zurich Insurance Group acquired it in 1998, and the structure separating the policyholder-owned exchanges from the management company has been in place since. That 1998 Zurich acquisition is why the Zurich name appears in Farmers' corporate structure without Zurich owning the risk.
Modern history includes brand expansion through acquisitions including Foremost Insurance Group in 2000 and Bristol West in 2007, the 2009 acquisition of 21st Century Insurance (later sold), and digital investment as insurance buying shifted online. Vargas became CEO in 2023.
Farmers Insurance Group of Companies Sustainability & Ethics
As a mutual insurer, Farmers' sustainability disclosures are modest and self-reported, covering community giving and workplace practices rather than formal ESG frameworks.
The mutual structure means profits stay with policyholders rather than shareholders, the fundamental alignment pitch. The Zurich management relationship, however, means the management company's economics accrue to a public company even though the risk stays mutual, a structural nuance critics periodically raise.
Climate exposure is standard for a property insurer: wildfire and hail losses across its footprint drive rate increases and underwriting discipline in exposed markets, shared industry problems rather than company failings.
Awards & Recognition
The exchanges hold an A rating from AM Best, a solid financial strength credential below the A++ tier held by top mutuals but well within secure range.
Farmers is a perennial Fortune 500 member and appears on workplace and customer satisfaction rankings, with J.D. Power studies regularly placing its claims satisfaction among higher-rated insurers.
Its "We Are Farmers" campaign and agent-focused brand positioning are among the most recognized in US insurance.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
Attorney-in-fact structure scrutiny: The separation of the policyholder-owned exchanges from Zurich-owned management has drawn periodic legal and regulatory scrutiny over whether management fees and governance serve policyholders adequately, a recurring structural question rather than a violation.
Claims litigation: As a top-10 property and casualty insurer, Farmers faces ordinary bad-faith and coverage disputes including wildfire and storm claim litigation in exposed states, handled case by case without systemic findings.
Rate and underwriting regulation: Insurance departments in all states oversee the exchanges, with the standard post-2022 rate increase approvals and market conduct examinations across the industry.
