History of Edward Jones
Edward D. Jones Sr. founded the firm in St. Louis in 1922 as a traditional downtown brokerage. The defining innovation came from his son: Edward D. "Ted" Jones Jr., who joined in 1948 and pioneered the single-broker branch, opening offices in small towns across the Midwest in the 1950s. The bet that rural and suburban savers wanted a local advisor rather than a call to a distant firm built the model that still defines the company.
Growth ran for decades on the back of that one-advisor-one-office formula. Managing partners John Bachmann (1980-2003), Jim Weddle (2009-2018), and Penny Pennington (2019-present) expanded the advisor count past 15,000 while maintaining the partnership structure and the branch model.
Pennington, who joined as a financial advisor in 2000 and became the firm's sixth managing partner and first woman in the role in 2019, has overseen the most strategic change in company history. In May 2025 the firm launched Edward Jones Generations, its first private-client service for households with $10 million or more in investable assets, opening alternative investments including private equity, private credit, and private real estate for the first time. It received conditional approval to establish Edward Jones Bank and launched Edward Jones Ventures to back innovation. The "Enterprise Reimagined" restructuring is modernizing the firm's back-office structure.
Fiscal 2025 results reflected the expansion: net revenue rose 11% to $18 billion, assets under care grew 14% to $2.5 trillion, and advisory AUC passed $1 trillion. The firm serves more than 9 million clients through 20,425 advisors.
Edward Jones Sustainability & Ethics
As a private partnership, the firm's stewardship emphasizes advisor training, financial literacy programs, and community investment rather than public ESG frameworks. Its client-first suitability standard is the core ethical posture, though as a major broker-dealer it carries routine regulatory oversight.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
Edward Jones has faced regulatory actions typical of a large broker-dealer: mutual fund sales-practice and revenue-sharing matters in the 2000s and 2010s, and periodic FINRA and SEC examinations and fines. No company-defining scandal is on record as of November 2026.
