History of Crazy Maple Studio

Joey Jia founded Crazy Maple Studio in 2016 during the expansion of mobile reading and free-to-play entertainment. The company initially concentrated on interactive story applications. Its model applied game mechanics to fiction, letting readers choose plot directions and use virtual currency for premium options.

Chapters: Interactive Stories became the company's first major consumer property. It offered licensed and original romance, fantasy, and drama stories through iOS and Android. In-app purchases funded access to choices and episodes. The format gave the company experience in customer acquisition, serialized narratives, payment behavior, and rapid content testing.

COL Digital Publishing invested through affiliated entities as part of its effort to distribute intellectual property outside China. COL is a Shenzhen-listed digital publishing company. Its content interests and Crazy Maple's mobile distribution created a commercial connection, but the later ownership structure remained more limited than outright control.

Crazy Maple entered vertical video with ReelShort in 2022. Vertical dramas use short episodes, frequent plot turns, and cliffhangers suited to phone viewing. A series can contain dozens of episodes, with early installments available without charge and later installments unlocked through advertising, virtual coins, or subscriptions.

ReelShort gained international attention in 2023 as download and consumer-spending estimates rose. Titles used recognizable romance and melodrama patterns, including hidden wealth, contract relationships, family conflict, revenge, and supernatural fiction. Production budgets were below conventional television levels, while mobile advertising let the company test many titles and scale promotion around those that converted viewers into payers.

The ownership presentation changed in April 2023. COL disclosed that Crazy Maple's board and voting allocation had been revised. COL's economic holding remained 49.16 percent, but its voting rights became 47.81 percent. Management nominees received four of seven board seats. COL concluded that it no longer controlled Crazy Maple and changed from consolidation to equity-method accounting.

That accounting decision is important. Before deconsolidation, Crazy Maple results could be included line by line in COL group accounts. Under the equity method, COL generally recognizes its share of the affiliate's result as one investment line. The change did not mean COL sold its entire economic stake.

Crazy Maple expanded ReelShort production and localization after the 2023 growth period. It commissioned programs in additional languages and markets and built production relationships outside China. Competitors also entered the category, increasing bidding for scripts, actors, advertising inventory, and experienced production teams.

The company continued operating Chapters alongside ReelShort. Interactive reading and short video use related intellectual property skills but different production costs. Maintaining both gives Crazy Maple more than one format for serialized fiction, although ReelShort has become its most visible brand.

Crazy Maple Studio Sustainability & Ethics

Digital distribution avoids physical retail inventory, but streaming, cloud computing, production travel, sets, costumes, and advertising all consume resources. Crazy Maple does not publish a verified emissions inventory or net-zero target. No B Corp certification was found.

Labor issues are more immediate. Short-drama schedules can be fast and budgets can be tight. Producers must follow wage, safety, working-time, and union rules in each location. Individual productions may use outside companies, but Crazy Maple still has reputational and contractual reasons to monitor conditions.

Apps using virtual currency should state prices, renewal terms, and refund rules clearly. Repeated cliffhangers and rapid purchases can create consumer complaints if the total cost of completing a series is hard to anticipate. Parents should also review age ratings and purchase controls.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

The company's ownership has often been misstated as full COL control. COL's April 2023 filing resolves the current accounting point: COL retained a large stake but lost control after voting and board changes. This page follows that filing.

Vertical-drama apps have received complaints about pricing, automatic renewal, repetitive advertising, and the cost of unlocking full series. These concerns are category-wide and should not be turned into a legal finding against Crazy Maple without a regulator or court decision. Store terms and current checkout disclosures are the relevant evidence for an individual purchase.

Productions also face copyright, labor, and content-rating rules. No major final public regulatory penalty against Crazy Maple was identified in the primary sources used for this update. Store enforcement or removal in one territory would need to be dated and distinguished from a global corporate sanction.
