History of Access Industries, Inc.

Len Blavatnik founded Access in 1986. The group made investments in industrial and commodity businesses before expanding into media, telecommunications, technology, and property.

Access acquired Warner Music Group in 2011 for approximately $3.3 billion. Warner later returned to public markets, but Access retained voting control through the share structure.

Access first invested in Deezer in 2012. It increased its influence as Deezer raised capital and pursued international growth. Deezer entered Euronext Paris in July 2022 through a combination with I2PO. Contrary to some secondary summaries, Deezer was not taken private by Access in 2024 and remains listed.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

Concentrated control can reduce the influence of minority shareholders. For Deezer, the relevant issue is accurate terminology: Access is a controlling shareholder, not the sole owner. Deezer's continued Euronext listing gives minority investors regulated disclosure and voting rights.
