History of AECOM
The company formed in 1990 as Ashland Technology Corporation, a vehicle created to acquire the engineering businesses of Ashland Oil. Founder Richard Newman renamed it AECOM in the mid-1990s as an acronym for its disciplines: Architecture, Engineering, Consulting, Operations, and Management. It went public on the NYSE in 2007.
Growth ran almost entirely through acquisition, assembling dozens of prominent engineering firms. Landmark deals included the 2008 Earth Tech acquisition, the 2010 purchase of Tishman Construction for $245 million which added construction management, and the transformative 2014 acquisition of URS Corporation for roughly $4 billion plus debt, which vaulted AECOM into the top tier of global engineering and added the program management franchise.
Troy Rudd became CEO in October 2020 and led the simplification: the Management Services unit spun into what became Amentum in 2020, construction management and oil and gas businesses were sold in 2021, and headquarters moved from Los Angeles to Dallas in 2021. The resulting focused firm posted five consecutive years of expanding margins and record profitability in fiscal 2025: $16.1 billion in revenue, $7.6 billion net service revenue, $702 million adjusted net income, and $24.8 billion in backlog.
