Johann Viessmann founded the company in 1917 in the village of Allendorf in central Germany, initially as a locksmith's workshop that moved into steel boiler manufacturing. Viessmann pioneered welded steel boiler construction, which replaced heavier cast iron designs and established the firm's engineering reputation.
Under second-generation leader Hans Viessmann, the company industrialized boiler production and expanded across Germany through the postwar heating boom. The third generation, led by Martin Viessmann from 1992, transformed the business from a boiler manufacturer into an integrated climate and energy company, adding solar thermal, photovoltaics, biomass, and heat pump lines.
The fourth generation took over in 2017 when Maximilian Viessmann became CEO of the Viessmann Group. By then the company had grown into one of Europe's largest heating manufacturers, with more than 12,000 employees, production sites in Germany, Poland, Turkey, and China, and sales across more than 70 countries. Its Vitovalor, Vitodens, and Vitocal product families became benchmarks in condensing boiler and heat pump technology.
In April 2023, Carrier announced it would acquire Viessmann Climate Solutions for approximately 12 billion euros. The transaction closed in January 2024. For Carrier, the deal delivered European market leadership in residential heating, a strong heat pump position, and a connected home energy platform through Viessmann's Viessmann One Base digital ecosystem. For Viessmann, it provided the capital and global reach to compete with larger rivals Bosch and Vaillant.
In 2025, Carrier agreed to sell Riello, a Viessmann-era European heating business, to Ariston Group; the sale completed July 1, 2026, sharpening the segment around the core Viessmann brand.
