Who Owns Carrier Transicold?

Carrier entered transport refrigeration in 1970, building on Willis Carrier's air conditioning heritage to address refrigerated shipping. The Transicold name combined transport and cold, and the business initially focused on diesel-powered refrigeration units for truck trailers.

Container shipping growth through the 1970s and 1980s created a new market. Ocean carriers needed refrigeration for perishable cargo moving between continents, and Carrier Transicold developed container refrigeration units that became an industry standard. The business expanded into rail refrigeration and small truck and van units, covering every mode of refrigerated land and sea transport.

Technological milestones included microprocessor controls for precise temperature management, multi-temperature trailer systems for mixed loads, and eventually electric and hybrid refrigeration units as emissions regulations tightened. The company also developed telematics for cold chain monitoring, letting shippers verify temperature compliance across journeys.

Carrier Transicold operated within United Technologies' climate businesses until the 2020 spin-off created Carrier Global. Under the post-2020 portfolio review, Carrier initially grouped refrigeration with plans for divestiture, but transport refrigeration was retained while the commercial refrigeration business was sold to Haier. The decision reflected Carrier Transicold's market leadership and aftermarket characteristics.

In 2025, Carrier Transicold launched the OptimaLINE container refrigeration unit, aimed at reducing shipping line energy costs and emissions. The brand's cold chain role expanded during and after the pandemic-era focus on vaccine and pharmaceutical distribution, segments where verified temperature control is critical.
