John M. Noel founded Travel Guard in Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 1982, building one of the first dedicated travel insurance operations in the United States. The original proposition was narrow: trip cancellation and interruption coverage sold through travel agents at a time when airline tickets were paper and refunds were rare. The Stevens Point location grew into a substantial operation as packaged tours and cruise bookings expanded the market for trip protection.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, Travel Guard added the services that define the category: 24-hour assistance hotlines, emergency medical evacuation coordination, baggage protection, and coverage sold through airlines, cruise lines, and tour operators as well as directly to consumers. By the early 2000s it was among the largest travel insurance providers in North America.
AIG acquired Travel Guard Group in 2006, fitting the business into its accident and health portfolio and plugging the brand's assistance network into AIG's global footprint. The acquisition gave Travel Guard underwriting scale and gave AIG a consumer-facing travel brand with an established agent distribution channel.
In the 2010s the brand's marketing consolidated under the AIG Travel banner, with Travel Guard retained as the product name for plans sold on travelguard.com and through partners. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was the category's defining stress test: trip cancellation claims spiked worldwide, then demand for coverage surged as travel resumed with new consumer awareness of medical and evacuation risk. Travel Guard emerged with expanded product options including Cancel For Any Reason upgrades and annual multi-trip plans.
The brand's parent simplification has not touched it: while AIG separated Corebridge and sold reinsurance assets between 2022 and 2025, Travel Guard remained inside the General Insurance core, reflecting travel insurance's role as a steady, fee-light premium line.
