History of The Cove Atlantis

  • Founded: 2007
  • Founders: Sol Kerzner (Atlantis Resorts)

The Cove Atlantis opened in March 2007 as part of a roughly $1 billion expansion of Atlantis Paradise Island under the vision of Sol Kerzner and Kerzner International Limited. The tower was developed to provide a luxury, adults-oriented experience within the broader family-oriented resort, catering to couples and guests seeking a more tranquil, sophisticated atmosphere.

The Cove was designed as a 600-suite luxury tower offering elevated accommodations and exclusive amenities. Tucked between two beaches, The Cove was conceived as the resort's quieter, more refined enclave. The tower features contemporary design elements, private pools, and exclusive access to amenities that distinguish it from the family-focused areas of the resort. The adults-only pool complex includes four interconnected pools over multiple levels with 26 private cabanas.

Under Brookfield's ownership since 2012, The Cove has continued to receive investments in facility upgrades and enhanced services. The tower has established itself as Atlantis Paradise Island's most exclusive accommodation option.

In 2026, Atlantis announced a full transformation of The Cove, beginning in spring 2026 and timed to the tower's 20th anniversary in 2027. The renovation encompasses all 600 suites, pools, public spaces, dining venues, and guest amenities. The Cove will remain open throughout the renovation, with work threaded around active guests rather than shutting the tower down. The project is expected to create more than 350 full-time jobs across construction, hospitality, and retail.

The Cove Atlantis Sustainability & Ethics

The Cove Atlantis operates under Atlantis Paradise Island's sustainability framework. Atlantis has been recognized for marine conservation leadership, including the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2005 that supports marine species and habitats throughout The Bahamas and Caribbean seas.

Atlantis eliminated single-use plastic bottles, styrofoam containers, utensils, and plastic bags across the resort. The resort received Virtuoso's Sustainable Leadership: Protecting the Planet Award for its commitment to marine life conservation and responsible tourism.

The Cove's renovation in 2026-2027 presents an opportunity to incorporate modern sustainability standards and innovative environmental practices. The redesigned suites will feature materials and systems aligned with contemporary sustainability practices. No Leaping Bunny, PETA, Vegan Society, or B Corp certification applies to The Cove Atlantis or Atlantis Paradise Island.

Awards & Recognition

The Cove Atlantis has received recognition within the luxury hospitality industry for its service, design, and amenities. The tower's contemporary architecture and luxury accommodations have received praise from travel critics and industry professionals.

As part of Atlantis Paradise Island, The Cove benefits from the resort's broader recognition, including Virtuoso's Sustainable Leadership: Protecting the Planet Award for marine conservation. Atlantis achieved record visitation in 2024 and 2025, the highest in the resort's history, reflecting the strength of the overall resort offering.

The 2026-2027 transformation, timed to The Cove's 20th anniversary, is positioned to receive recognition for design excellence and innovative luxury hospitality concepts. The renovation includes partnerships with luxury brands such as Tiffany and Co. and Lalique for custom suite details.

The Cove Atlantis Recalls & Controversies

Weather-Related Operational Challenges: As a Caribbean resort, The Cove Atlantis faces seasonal weather risks from hurricanes and tropical storms. The Bahamas' location in the hurricane belt creates operational disruptions during hurricane season, though these are natural weather events rather than operational controversies.

Beach Tower Redevelopment Uncertainty: While not directly affecting The Cove, the stalled Somewhere Else project at the former Beach Tower site creates uncertainty about the broader Atlantis complex's development trajectory. Brookfield is evaluating plans to redevelop the former Beach Tower but has not provided a timeline.

Renovation Disruption: The 2026-2027 transformation of The Cove will take place while the tower remains open, creating potential guest experience disruptions during construction. Atlantis is threading the renovation around active guests, which could impact the guest experience during the renovation period.

Environmental Impact: As a large resort complex, Atlantis Paradise Island faces ongoing considerations regarding its environmental footprint, particularly in water usage, energy consumption, and waste management. The resort has addressed these concerns through comprehensive sustainability programs and the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation.
