State Street created its asset management arm in 1978 in Boston, building an indexing business for institutional clients at a time when passive management was still an emerging idea. The division, known as State Street Global Advisors, grew into one of the world's largest index managers.
The defining moment came in January 1993, when the division partnered with the American Stock Exchange to launch the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the first exchange-traded fund listed in the United States. That product seeded the global ETF industry and remains the world's most traded fund. The division followed with the Select Sector SPDRs in 1998 and SPDR Gold Shares in 2004.
Through the 2000s and 2010s the business expanded into active quantitative strategies, cash management, target-date funds, and outsourced CIO services, serving institutions, advisors, and individual investors across more than 60 countries. Yie-Hsin Hung became CEO in 2022.
On June 30, 2025, State Street Global Advisors rebranded as State Street Investment Management, retiring the SSGA name after 47 years. The division reported record AUM of $5.7 trillion at year-end 2025 and record management fee revenue of $2.4 billion for the year. In January 2026 it agreed to acquire a 23% stake in Groww Asset Management, an Indian asset manager, for up to $64.2 million. By September 2026 AUM had reached approximately $6.3 trillion.
