John Nuveen founded John Nuveen & Co. in Chicago in 1898 as a municipal bond underwriting and brokerage firm. For most of the twentieth century the firm built its reputation on tax-exempt bonds, underwriting infrastructure issues for cities and states and distributing them to income-oriented investors. It became one of the largest underwriters and asset managers in the US municipal market, a franchise that still anchors the brand.
The firm expanded into mutual funds and closed-end funds over the second half of the century, and Nuveen's municipal closed-end funds became a fixture for income-oriented retail investors. The Nuveen name, pronounced and marketed as a wordmark, was formalized when the firm reorganized its fund businesses under Nuveen Investments. The company went public in the 1990s and remained listed until 2007, when Madison Dearborn Partners took the firm private in a leveraged buyout valued at roughly $5.75 billion.
Under private equity ownership Nuveen collected a roster of specialist managers, including NWQ, Gresham, Winslow Capital, Symphony, and later Churchill Asset Management, turning a muni-bond shop into a multi-boutique asset manager. TIAA announced its purchase of Nuveen in April 2014 and closed the roughly $6.25 billion transaction later that year, combining Nuveen with TIAA's internal investment teams.
TIAA has used Nuveen as a platform for bolt-on deals. In 2016 TIAA acquired Henderson Global Investors' European real estate arm, TH Real Estate, and in 2017 it consolidated its asset management businesses under the Nuveen name, replacing the TIAA Global Asset Management identity. In March 2023 Nuveen closed the acquisition of a controlling interest in Arcmont Asset Management, a London-based private debt manager with roughly $21 billion in committed capital. Arcmont and Churchill were combined into Nuveen Private Capital, a unit with more than $66.5 billion in committed capital that ranks among the largest global private debt managers. Nuveen Natural Capital, built partly on the Westchester Group farmland platform, manages billions in agricultural and timberland assets.
Since the acquisition, Nuveen has grown into one of the largest asset managers in the world. Its real estate platform managed about $137 billion as of December 31, 2025, and the firm is among the largest managers of US farmland and a top-20 global manager by assets according to Pensions & Investments. Assets under management reached approximately $1.4 trillion as of March 31, 2026. Bill Huffman serves as Nuveen's chief executive.
