History of Charles River IMS

  • Founded: 1984
  • Founders: Peter K. Lambertus
  • Acquired by State Street Corporation: 2018

Peter K. Lambertus founded Charles River Development in 1984 in Burlington, Massachusetts. Lambertus, a former Naval officer with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, started the company to build technology for the buy-side investment management industry. The company's early focus was on order management systems for institutional asset managers.

Throughout the 1990s, Charles River Development grew steadily as a private company. The firm built its reputation on the Charles River Investment Management Solution (IMS), a platform that automated front and middle office processes for buy-side firms. The platform covered portfolio management, risk analytics, trading, and post-trade settlement with integrated compliance and managed data.

The 2000s brought significant expansion. Charles River added capabilities across asset classes and expanded its client base to include investment managers, wealth managers, asset owners, and insurers. The company remained privately held throughout this period, with Lambertus maintaining control. By the 2010s, Charles River IMS was used by firms managing a substantial portion of the world's securities.

In 2018, State Street Corporation announced its agreement to acquire Charles River Development for approximately $2.6 billion. The deal was announced on July 20, 2018, and completed on October 1, 2018. The acquisition was State Street's largest technology deal and represented a strategic push into front-office technology. At the time, State Street's technology business was oriented toward the back and middle office, covering custody, servicing, and administration. Charles River gave State Street a foothold in the front office, specifically in the order management system (OMS) and execution management system (EMS) markets.

Following the acquisition, John Plansky replaced Peter Lambertus as CEO of the Charles River Development division. Lambertus stepped down from the CEO role as part of the acquisition agreement. State Street established a Charles River Development Client Advisory Board to provide strategic input into platform development, chaired by Jenny Tsouvalis of OMERS Administration Corporation.

After the acquisition, Charles River IMS was integrated into State Street's broader platform strategy. The platform became the front-office foundation of State Street Alpha, which combines Charles River's cloud-based front-office technology with State Street's middle and back-office services. This created an interoperable, front-to-back platform from a single provider.

In recent years, Charles River IMS has continued to expand its capabilities. The platform added support for private markets, addressing data challenges in private credit, real estate, private equity, and infrastructure. T. Rowe Price, a major asset manager, migrated to Charles River IMS in 2024, expanding its relationship with the platform. As of Q1 2024, investment and wealth managers, asset owners, and insurers in over 30 countries relied on Charles River IMS to manage USD $59 trillion in assets. The company has grown its headcount by more than 135% over the past five years and provides 24/7 global support.
