History of Smurfit Westrock

  • Founded: 2024
  • Founders: Merger of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock

The Smurfit Westrock brand is new, but the names it joins are old. The Smurfit side began in 1934, when Jefferson Smurfit acquired a Dublin box-making business. His son Michael Smurfit turned it into Ireland's dominant packaging company, then expanded into Britain and continental Europe through the 1960s and 1970s. A landmark 1980s deal with Morgan Stanley brought Container Corporation of America assets into the group and made it a transatlantic player. In 2002 Jefferson Smurfit Group merged with Dutch rival Kappa Packaging to form Smurfit Kappa, which was taken private by Madison Dearborn in 2005 and relisted in London in 2007.

The Rock side traces to RockTenn, a Georgia packaging company with roots in 1973, and to MeadWestvaco, created in 2002 from the merger of Mead, founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1846, and Westvaco, founded in 1888. RockTenn and MeadWestvaco combined in 2015 to create WestRock, headquartered in Atlanta, which became North America's second-largest corrugated packaging producer.

In September 2023 the two companies announced a combination worth roughly $20 billion including debt. WestRock shareholders received one Smurfit Westrock share plus $5.00 cash per share when the deal closed on July 5, 2024. The Smurfit Westrock brand launched the same day, unifying sales literature, plant signage, and customer contracts under one name across both legacy networks.

The brand's first full calendar year was 2025, during which it was attached to a large integration program. The company closed around 600,000 tons of paper capacity, shuttered or sold loss-making converting operations, and harmonized the combined go-to-market approach. By the end of 2025 the brand represented $31.2 billion of annual net sales, making it instantly one of the largest industrial brands ever launched.

Smurfit Westrock Sustainability & Ethics

Sustainability is the core of the brand's pitch to customers. Smurfit Westrock packages goods in paper rather than plastic, sources fiber through FSC and PEFC certified chains, and runs its own recovered paper collection and recycling loop so that the packaging it sells can re-enter its mills as raw material.

The group reports annually on emissions, water, and waste, and operates circular-economy programs such as Better Planet Packaging, which helps customers swap plastic formats for fiber alternatives. Composite and coated packs still depend on local recycling infrastructure, a constraint the company acknowledges in its reporting.
