History of Mondi plc
Mondi was founded in 1967 in South Africa, where Anglo American Corporation built the Mondi Valley pulp and paper mill near Durban, taking the name from the Latin-derived word for world. For its first four decades it operated as Anglo American's paper and packaging arm, expanding through South African mills and then into European acquisitions.
The group bought heavily in central and eastern Europe through the 1990s and 2000s, acquiring mills and packaging plants in Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, which established the cost-advantaged central European asset base that defines it today. It also built a substantial Russian operation centered on the Syktyvkar mill.
In 2007 Mondi was demerged from Anglo American and listed with a dual-listed company structure on the London and Johannesburg exchanges. The structure was simplified in 2019 when Mondi Limited was folded into Mondi plc, leaving a single UK-incorporated listed entity. Andrew King became CEO in 2020, succeeding David Hathorn's long tenure.
Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine forced a reshaping: Mondi announced its exit and completed the sale of its Russian operations, including the Syktyvkar mill, in 2023. The proceeds partly funded the pivot back toward Western Europe. In March 2025 the company completed its acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's Western European corrugated and solid board assets, a deal that added well-invested converting plants in Germany and Poland and deepened its corrugated network.
In 2025 the company merged its Corrugated Packaging and Uncoated Fine Paper organizations to streamline management, closed three plants across its paper bag and corrugated network, and reported underlying EBITDA of 1.0 billion euros on 7.66 billion euros of revenue amid continued weak pricing.
Mondi plc Sustainability & Ethics
Mondi's sustainability claim rests on fiber certification and integrated forestry. It manages forests to FSC standards in South Africa and Europe, sources the large majority of its wood from certified or controlled sources, and reports against emissions, water, and biodiversity targets in an integrated annual report.
The company has committed to science-based emissions reductions and to making its packaging portfolio reusable, recyclable, or compostable. Its paper-based formats position it as a beneficiary of plastic-substitution demand. Forestry practices in South Africa, where plantation land use and biodiversity are sensitive issues, attract periodic scrutiny from environmental groups, and the company discloses its responses in reporting.
No major greenwashing enforcement action is on record. The exit from Russia removed a governance and reputational exposure that had weighed on the group.
Awards & Recognition
Mondi is a FTSE 100 constituent and appears in Forbes' Global 2000. It has received packaging industry awards for innovation, particularly for recyclable and paper-based packaging formats, and has been recognized in CDP and other sustainability assessments relative to sector peers. Its inclusion in ESG indices reflects its integrated-forestry credentials rather than consumer-brand visibility.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
The most significant scrutiny of recent years concerned Russia. Mondi's decision to remain in Russia after the 2022 invasion drew criticism until it completed the divestment of its Russian operations in 2023, a process complicated by approvals and a discounted exit price.
In 2024 the company faced a UK bribery-related investigation disclosure linked to historical conduct in Russia, which it reported and cooperated on. Plant closures in 2025, including sites in Turkey, Hungary, and Germany, produced local labor friction. Competition reviews of the Schumacher acquisition were cleared without major remedies.
