Mondi began in 1967 when Anglo American Corporation opened the Mondi Valley pulp and paper mill in South Africa, naming the operation after the Latin-derived word for world. For its first four decades it grew inside Anglo American as the group's paper and packaging arm, expanding from South African mills into European acquisitions through the 1990s.
The decisive expansion came in central and eastern Europe, where Mondi acquired mills and packaging plants in Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Those purchases established the low-cost central European asset base that still defines the brand's competitiveness. It also built a significant Russian operation around the Syktyvkar mill.
In 2007 Mondi was demerged from Anglo American and listed through a dual structure in London and Johannesburg. The structure was simplified in 2019 into a single UK-incorporated plc. Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine forced a further reshaping: Mondi completed the sale of its Russian operations in 2023, closing a long chapter in its history.
In March 2025 the brand absorbed the Western European corrugated and solid board plants of Schumacher Packaging, adding converting scale in Germany and Poland. Through 2025 it integrated those plants while closing others and merging its corrugated and fine paper organizations to simplify management. The year ended with 7.66 billion euros of revenue in a weak packaging cycle.

Mondi reports emissions, water, and biodiversity performance in an integrated report and holds science-based targets. The sensitive area is forestry land use in South Africa, where plantation practices and biodiversity attract periodic environmental scrutiny that the company addresses through certification and disclosure.
