History of Saily

  • Founded: 2024
  • Founders: Nord Security (internal development)

Nord Security announced Saily in January 2024, opening early-access signups while the app was in internal testing. At the time the company said the eSIM was designed to make global internet connectivity as smooth as possible for travelers and remote workers, leveraging Nord's existing reputation in consumer privacy tools.

The beta rolled out in the first quarter of 2024, and Saily launched publicly on March 27, 2024. The initial offer covered flexible data plans ranging from 1 to 20 gigabytes on weekly or monthly terms, with coverage across a broad set of destinations and 24/7 customer support. The launch positioned Saily directly against Airalo, the category leader.

Through 2024 and 2025 Saily expanded quickly. Coverage grew to roughly 200 destinations, the app added regional and global plans, and Nord Security integrated security-flavored features aligned with its brand, including ad blocking and web protection functionality built into the connection layer. The product also picked up marketing partnerships in the travel and creator space, benefiting from NordVPN's existing affiliate and sponsorship machine.

Saily's launch cadence has been faster than most eSIM startups because it inherited Nord Security's engineering, payments infrastructure, and global customer base rather than building from zero. By 2026 it was firmly established as the number two brand in travel eSIMs by visibility, competing on trust and security positioning rather than purely on price.

About Nord Security

What is Nord Security?

Nord Security is a private Lithuanian cybersecurity company founded in 2012 by Tom Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas. It is best known as the company behind NordVPN and now operates a broader suite including NordPass, NordLocker, NordLayer, NordStellar, NordProtect, and the Saily travel eSIM.

Is Nord Security publicly traded?

No. Nord Security is private. It raised $100 million in 2022 at a $1.6 billion valuation and another $100 million in 2023 at about $3 billion. Leadership has discussed maintaining IPO readiness but has not announced a listing.

Who owns Nord Security?

Founders Tom Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas retain controlling ownership. Minority investors include Novator Ventures, Burda Principal Investments, and General Catalyst, plus angel investors from the European tech sector.

Where is Nord Security headquartered?

Nord Security's operational headquarters and largest hub is Vilnius, Lithuania. Some legal entities, particularly those tied to NordVPN service operations, are registered in other jurisdictions including Panama, a common arrangement among privacy-focused VPN providers.

What is Nord Security's market position?

Nord Security is one of the two largest consumer VPN companies globally by brand awareness and subscribers. NordVPN is its flagship, and the company has expanded into password management, business network security, identity protection, and travel eSIMs. It is Lithuania's most prominent tech unicorn.

Does Nord Security own Surfshark?

Nord Security merged operations with Surfshark in early 2022, so both brand families sit under common ownership. They continue to operate and market as separate brands rather than being merged into a single product.

Saily Ownership: Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • +Backed by Nord Security's cash flow and approximately $3 billion valuation
  • +Immediate distribution to NordVPN's large existing user base
  • +Security positioning differentiates it from pure price-led eSIM rivals
  • +Shared engineering, payments, and support infrastructure lowers operating cost
  • +Parent company is profitable and under no pressure to exit

Considerations

  • -Brand is tied to Nord's reputation, so a Nord-level security incident would spill over
  • -Faces Airalo's entrenched scale and wholesale relationships
  • -eSIM purchasing is increasingly commoditized inside phone operating systems
  • -As a product line rather than a company, its economics are not separately reported
  • -Travel connectivity has structurally thin margins
