History of Tesonet

Tomas Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas founded Tesonet in Vilnius in 2008, starting as a small startup operation building digital products at a time when Lithuania had little venture infrastructure.

The defining venture came in 2012 when Okmanas, Sabaliauskas, and friends founded Nord Security within the group. NordVPN launched in 2013 and scaled into one of the world's most recognized consumer VPN products. The company later layered on adjacent security products: NordPass, NordLocker, and NordLayer in 2019, NordLynx in 2020, NordStellar in 2021, and NordProtect in 2024.

From 2018 onward Tesonet expanded from builder to investor. Its investment book came to include a major stake in Hostinger, the Kaunas-based web hosting company founded in 2004, plus positions in Oxylabs, Decodo, ScrapingBee, Mediatech, CyberCare, Turing College, Eneba, Artea, PartiQlar, Siauliu Bankas, Zapp, CAST AI, and AI coding startup Lovable.

In 2021 its customer care arm was reorganized to serve the group's global ventures, a multilingual operation handling millions of enquiries per year across 170 countries with a team exceeding 400 people.

In 2022 Nord Security completed its merger with Surfshark, forming a combined cybersecurity entity that kept both consumer brands operating independently. The deal cemented Tesonet's position behind two of the largest VPN names in the market.

The newest emphasis is AI. nexos.ai, an AI orchestration platform for the agentic era, was built in the group, and stakes in Lovable and CAST AI extended the AI exposure. By 2026 Tesonet described itself as a founder-led venture builder behind more than 50 ventures with a 4,000-plus-person ecosystem.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

NordVPN server incident (2018, disclosed 2019): A rented NordVPN server in a Finnish data centre was accessed via an insecure remote management interface. No user credentials or traffic logs were exposed, but Nord Security drew criticism for delayed disclosure after researchers publicised the issue. The company responded with audits and expanded security programs.

VPN consolidation transparency (2022): The Nord Security and Surfshark merger meant two consumer VPN brands competing in market shared common ownership roots. Commentators raised questions about review-site transparency and whether consumers understood the consolidation. Both brands continue operating independently.

Group opacity (ongoing): Tesonet publishes limited consolidated financial information relative to its holdings' scale, and portfolio companies' offshore registrations have drawn periodic questions in VPN industry coverage.

Considerations
