History of Landmark (Halliburton)

  • Founded: 1982
  • Founders: Landmark Graphics Corporation
  • Acquired by Halliburton Company: 1998

Landmark Graphics Corporation was founded in 1982 in Houston, spinning out of work on computer graphics for seismic data interpretation. The company pioneered the application of 3D visualization to subsurface oil and gas exploration, a breakthrough that let geologists and engineers see reservoirs in three dimensions rather than interpreting two-dimensional seismic sections.

The company went public in the 1980s and grew into the standard for seismic interpretation workstations. Its software became essential tools at major oil companies for reservoir characterization, field development planning, and drilling optimization.

Dresser Industries acquired Landmark in 1992, adding the software leader to its oilfield services portfolio. When Halliburton acquired Dresser in 1998, Landmark became part of Halliburton's technology offering alongside Sperry-Sun.

Under Halliburton, Landmark evolved from workstation software to enterprise and cloud-based platforms. The DecisionSpace suite consolidated its applications into a unified architecture covering exploration, drilling, reservoir, and production workflows. The iEnergy hybrid cloud platform, introduced in the 2010s, moved the offering to a cloud subscription model.

The 2020s brought AI and machine learning integration: Landmark's AI-powered applications for drilling optimization, reservoir modeling, and predictive analytics represent the highest-growth portion of Halliburton's digital strategy, aligning with the industry shift toward data-driven operations.
