KontrolFreek began in 2009 in Atlanta as an industrial design project. Founder Ashish Mistry, an entrepreneur who had co-founded Virtex Networks and worked at AirDefense, developed attachable grips that clipped onto controller thumbsticks to improve comfort and aim precision. Early funding came from a $50,000 check by BLH Venture Partners, the Atlanta firm Mistry co-founded with Billy L. Harbert.
The first product, SpeedFreek, launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 controllers. The patented clip-on design did not modify the controller electronics, which made the accessories legal for tournament play. Professional gamers adopted the products early, and KontrolFreek became one of the first accessory brands formally sanctioned by major competitive gaming organizations, landing partnerships with Major League Gaming and Microsoft.
Through the 2010s the product line expanded across Performance Thumbsticks in multiple heights and concave or convex profiles, Performance Grips for controller shells, gaming cables, and licensed collaborations with game franchises including Call of Duty and Overwatch. The FreekNation community program built a direct relationship with millions of console players. Products reached more than 9,000 retail stores across 40 countries.
In December 2020, SteelSeries acquired KontrolFreek as its second major deal of the year after buying French audio software maker A-Volute in April. For SteelSeries, the purchase consolidated the console accessory market and added a brand with deep retail penetration in North America. KontrolFreek continued operating from Atlanta under its own name.
In January 2022 the ownership chain extended when GN Store Nord completed its 8 billion kroner acquisition of SteelSeries. KontrolFreek has since continued releasing licensed collections and expanding its thumbstick and grips catalog under the SteelSeries-GN structure.

KontrolFreek has no product recalls, regulatory actions, or material controversies on record. The brand's products are passive accessories that do not modify controller electronics, which has kept them clear of both safety regulation and the tournament-legality disputes that affect software-assisted peripherals. Consumer criticism is limited to ordinary durability complaints around rubber wear, typical for the category.
