History of International School Ho Chi Minh City

  • Founded: 1993
  • Founders: ISHCMC founding group
  • Acquired by Cognita Schools: 2007

International School Ho Chi Minh City was founded in 1993 as one of the first international schools in Vietnam. The school was established to serve the educational needs of expatriate families living in Ho Chi Minh City, as Vietnam's economic reforms (Doi Moi) attracted increasing foreign investment and international residents. The founding group recognized the need for English-language international education in the rapidly developing city.

In its early years, ISHCMC operated from a small campus with limited facilities, serving a modest number of students primarily from expatriate families. The school initially offered a British-style curriculum, reflecting the backgrounds of many founding families and teachers. As the school grew, it transitioned to the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum framework to better serve its diverse international student body.

In 2007, Cognita Schools acquired ISHCMC, bringing institutional investment and educational expertise to the school. Under Cognita's ownership, ISHCMC expanded its facilities, increased enrollment, and strengthened its academic programs. The acquisition provided capital for campus development and access to Cognita's global network of educational resources and professional development.

In 2017, ISHCMC opened a second campus, the ISHCMC Secondary Campus, located in Thu Thiem, a new urban development area in Ho Chi Minh City. The new campus was designed to serve secondary school students (ages 11-18) with modern facilities including science laboratories, arts studios, sports facilities, and technology-enabled classrooms. The original campus in District 2 was restructured to serve primary students (ages 3-11).

ISHCMC became an IB World School offering all three IB programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). This full IB continuum positions ISHCMC as one of the few schools in Vietnam offering the complete IB curriculum, which is recognized by universities worldwide.

The school has grown significantly in enrollment, from approximately 300 students in the early 2000s to over 1,200 students by 2025. The student body represents over 50 nationalities, reflecting Ho Chi Minh City's status as an international business hub. The school employs approximately 150 teachers, primarily from English-speaking countries, with additional Vietnamese teaching staff for language and cultural programs.

In recent years, ISHCMC has invested in technology integration, sustainability education, and wellbeing programs. The school has implemented 1:1 device programs, integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education across grade levels, and developed partnerships with local organizations for community service and environmental initiatives.

Awards & Recognition

IB World School Authorization: ISHCMC is authorized to offer all three International Baccalaureate programmes (PYP, MYP, and DP), making it one of the few full-continuum IB schools in Vietnam. This authorization requires meeting rigorous IB standards for curriculum, teaching quality, and school governance.

CIS Accreditation: ISHCMC holds accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS), an independent organization that evaluates international schools against standards for governance, curriculum, staffing, and student welfare. CIS accreditation is recognized globally as a mark of quality in international education.

NEASC Accreditation: ISHCMC also holds accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), providing additional recognition of the school's educational quality and standards.

IB Diploma Results: ISHCMC's IB Diploma Programme results have consistently exceeded global averages, with pass rates above 95 percent and average scores above the global mean. These results support graduates' admission to universities worldwide.

Cognita Quality Assurance: ISHCMC participates in Cognita's internal quality assurance processes, including regular school reviews and peer evaluations across the Cognita network. These processes ensure consistent educational standards across Cognita schools globally.

International School Ho Chi Minh City Recalls & Controversies

Tuition Fee Increases: ISHCMC has faced scrutiny over periodic tuition fee increases, which reflect the rising costs of international teaching staff, facility maintenance, and curriculum development. Some parents have expressed concerns about the affordability of premium international education in Vietnam, particularly as competition among international schools increases.

COVID-19 Disruption: The COVID-19 pandemic forced ISHCMC to transition to online learning for extended periods in 2020-2021, as Vietnam implemented strict lockdown measures. The school invested in digital learning platforms and teacher training for online instruction, but the transition created challenges for student engagement, social interaction, and practical subjects.

Staff Turnover: International schools in Vietnam, including ISHCMC, face challenges with teacher turnover, as international teaching staff typically stay for 2-5 years before moving to other positions. This turnover requires ongoing recruitment and onboarding, and can affect continuity in educational programs.

Competition from New Schools: The growing international school market in Ho Chi Minh City has attracted new entrants, increasing competition for students. ISHCMC must continuously invest in facilities, programs, and marketing to maintain its market position against both established competitors and new international school openings.

Local Regulatory Environment: International schools in Vietnam operate under government regulations that can affect curriculum, staffing, and enrollment. Changes in regulations regarding foreign investment in education, teacher licensing, and Vietnamese student enrollment at international schools can create operational uncertainty.
