EMCOR's roots reach back to Jamaica Water Properties, a New York utility company that renamed itself JWP Inc. in the 1980s and built a technical services empire by acquiring mechanical and electrical contractors at a rapid pace. The debt from that buying spree forced JWP into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1993.
The reorganized company emerged on December 15, 1994, under the EMCOR name with Frank MacInnis as CEO. MacInnis sold the water utilities, kept the strongest contracting subsidiaries, and layered on facilities management services to create recurring revenue between construction cycles. The strategy produced 27 consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue growth during his tenure.
Growth continued through acquisition. EMCOR bought 19 companies from bankrupt rival Comfort Systems USA for $186 million in 2002, added Consolidated Engineering Services for $178 million in 2003, acquired mechanical contractor Fluidics in 2005 and fire protection specialist Comunale in 2006, and purchased industrial services firm Ohmstede for $455 million in 2007.
Guzzi succeeded MacInnis as CEO in January 2011 and became chairman in 2015. Under Guzzi, the brand's focus shifted toward high-technology construction demand. Data center electrical and mechanical packages became the fastest-growing part of the business, lifting network and communications to the largest market sector in company backlog.
In December 2025, EMCOR completed the sale of its United Kingdom building services operations to OCS Group for approximately $255 million, making the brand a purely U.S. business. Fiscal 2025 closed at record revenue of $16.99 billion and record backlog of $13.25 billion.
