History of Kellogg's Corn Flakes
- Founded: 1906
- Founders: Will Keith Kellogg
Will Keith Kellogg accidentally invented corn flakes in 1894 while working at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, a health institution run by his brother Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. W.K. was attempting to cook wheat berries for patients when he left cooked wheat sitting out, and upon returning found the wheat had dried into flakes. He rolled the stale wheat into flakes, baked them, and discovered a crispy, palatable result. He subsequently applied the same process to corn grits, creating corn flakes.
W.K. Kellogg launched the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1906 to sell corn flakes commercially. The company grew rapidly, fueled by extensive advertising and the novelty of a convenient, pre-prepared breakfast food. In 1922, the company renamed itself the Kellogg Company in W.K. Kellogg's honor.
Corn Flakes established the template for the packaged breakfast cereal industry and generated the category that hundreds of subsequent brands would enter. The Kellogg Company built one of the most extensive global cereal brands portfolios over the following century.
