Conifer Health Solutions is wholly owned by Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC), a publicly traded healthcare services company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Tenet formed Conifer in 2008 as its in-house revenue cycle management arm. Catholic Health Initiatives, later CommonSpirit Health, held a minority stake from 2012 until January 2026, when a roughly $1.9 billion transaction returned Conifer to full Tenet ownership.

Tenet established Conifer Health Solutions in 2008 in Frisco, Texas, consolidating the revenue cycle operations of its hospital system into a standalone subsidiary with its own management and technology stack. The commercial logic was to turn a cost center into a business: sell the same billing and collections capability to other hospitals and physician groups.
The key event came in 2012, when Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country, acquired a minority equity stake in Conifer and signed on as its anchor client. The CHI relationship gave Conifer scale far beyond Tenet's own footprint and made it one of the largest revenue cycle vendors in the United States. The partnership survived the 2019 merger that created CommonSpirit Health, a 136-hospital system.
Growth continued through the 2010s as Conifer added value-based care services, physician practice management support, and offshore capacity, including a Global Business Center in Cebu, Philippines. At its peak the CommonSpirit contract accounted for a large share of Conifer's revenue.
The unwind began in early 2026. CommonSpirit, pursuing a multi-year system integration strategy, decided to bring revenue cycle in-house and negotiated early termination of the 2032 contract. The February 2, 2026 announcement valued the exit at about $1.9 billion payable to Tenet over three years plus a $540 million equity redemption. CommonSpirit's regions converted in waves through 2026, more than 1,900 Conifer employees were rebadged to CommonSpirit, and Tenet laid off roughly 1,000 additional staff in November as the work wound down. Tenet CEO Saum Sutaria described the deal as a highly accretive asset sale that happened to be structured as a contract exit.
Is Tenet Healthcare publicly traded?
Yes. Tenet trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker THC and is a component of the S&P 400 index. Its shares are held broadly by institutional investors. The company completed its initial public offering in 1969 under its former name, National Medical Enterprises.
Who owns Tenet Healthcare?
No single entity controls Tenet. It is a widely held public company whose largest shareholders are institutional asset managers such as Vanguard and BlackRock. Day-to-day control rests with Chairman and CEO Saum Sutaria and the board of directors.
When was Tenet Healthcare founded?
Tenet was incorporated in 1969 as National Medical Enterprises by attorneys Richard Eamer, Leonard Cohen, and John Bedrosian in Los Angeles. The company changed its name to Tenet Healthcare in 1995 after acquiring American Medical International.
What is USPI?
United Surgical Partners International is Tenet's ambulatory surgery subsidiary and the largest ASC platform in the United States. As of late 2026 it held interests in more than 530 ambulatory surgery centers and 25 surgical hospitals across 37 states. Tenet took a majority stake in 2015 and full ownership by 2021.
How many hospitals does Tenet own?
As of December 31, 2025, Tenet's hospital segment comprised 50 acute care and specialty hospitals plus 132 outpatient facilities, concentrated in eight states. The company has been shrinking this count deliberately, selling 14 hospitals in 2024 alone to focus on ambulatory growth.
What happened to Conifer Health Solutions?
Conifer remains a Tenet subsidiary. In February 2026 CommonSpirit Health paid to end its revenue cycle contract early and redeemed its 23.8% equity stake, returning Conifer to full Tenet ownership. Services to CommonSpirit wound down through October 2026, and Conifer cut about 1,000 positions as part of the restructuring.
The most significant negative event in Conifer's history is operational rather than legal: the 2026 CommonSpirit separation, which required the company to rebadge more than 1,900 employees to the client and lay off an additional 1,037 workers, primarily remote staff reporting to the Dallas headquarters, under a WARN notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission.
Earlier, Conifer drew scrutiny in 2019 when reporting on billing practices at its client hospitals highlighted aggressive collection tactics common across the revenue cycle industry. Like all RCM vendors, the company operates under strict HIPAA obligations around the patient data it processes.
