The Spirits Shelf: How Few Companies Own It All
Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Absolut, Jack Daniel's, Bacardi, Hennessy. The global spirits shelf is controlled by a small number of conglomerates. Here is the complete ownership map.
A well-stocked bar typically carries whisky from Scotland, bourbon from Kentucky, vodka from various origins, rum from the Caribbean, and cognac from France. The bottles look wildly different. The brand stories are told with reference to centuries of craft and heritage. But if you trace the ownership of the most widely sold spirits brands in the world, you arrive at a surprisingly small number of corporate owners.
Three publicly traded conglomerates -- Diageo, Pernod Ricard, and Brown-Forman -- plus a handful of private companies, control the overwhelming majority of the world's most recognized spirits brands. For context on how the alcohol industry concentrates at the beer level, see our post on 10 rival beer brands actually owned by AB InBev.
Diageo: The Largest Spirits Company in the World
Diageo (LSE / NYSE: DEO) is a British multinational and the largest spirits company in the world by revenue. Headquartered in London, Diageo reported net sales of approximately $20.3 billion for FY2024 and owns an estimated 200 brands across whisky, vodka, rum, gin, beer, and wine.
The company was formed in 1997 through the merger of Guinness PLC and Grand Metropolitan PLC. What followed was one of the most aggressive acquisition campaigns in the spirits industry, assembling a portfolio that would be nearly impossible to replicate today.
[Johnnie Walker](/brands/johnnie-walker) is Diageo's flagship and the best-selling Scotch whisky brand in the world. The brand, which dates to 1820 in Kilmarnock, Scotland, sells approximately 20 million cases annually across its Red Label, Black Label, Gold Label, Blue Label, and other expressions.
[Smirnoff](/brands/smirnoff) is the world's best-selling vodka brand by volume. Diageo acquired Smirnoff as part of the Grand Metropolitan merger. The brand traces its origins to Russian distiller Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov, who opened his Moscow distillery in 1864.
Tanqueray is one of the world's best-selling gin brands, founded in London in 1830. Diageo owns the brand and produces it in Cameronbridge, Scotland.
Captain Morgan is the best-selling rum brand in the United States and the second-largest rum brand globally. Diageo acquired it in 2001 when it purchased Seagram's spirits and wine business.
Baileys is the world's best-selling cream liqueur, with origins in Ireland. Diageo developed the brand internally in 1974.
Guinness is technically beer, but it warrants inclusion because Diageo's formation involved the Guinness brewery, and the brand remains a core part of the portfolio.
Crown Royal is the best-selling Canadian whisky in the United States, also acquired in the 2001 Seagram's deal.
Don Julio and Casamigos are Diageo's tequila brands. Casamigos was co-founded by actor George Clooney and two partners, and Diageo acquired it in 2017 for up to $1 billion.
Pernod Ricard: The Second-Largest Spirits Group
Pernod Ricard (Euronext Paris: RI) is a French multinational and the second-largest spirits company globally. Headquartered in Paris, Pernod Ricard reported net sales of approximately $11.6 billion for FY2024. The company was formed through the 1975 merger of Pernod and Ricard, two French anise-flavored spirit producers, and has grown through acquisitions ever since.
Absolut is the world's second-best-selling vodka brand. Pernod Ricard acquired The Absolut Company (then part of Vin & Sprit AB, owned by the Swedish government) in 2008 for approximately $8.9 billion.
Jameson Irish whiskey is one of Pernod Ricard's fastest-growing brands and the world's best-selling Irish whiskey. Pernod Ricard has held the Jameson brand through its Irish Distillers subsidiary since 1988.
Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky in Pernod Ricard's portfolio, acquired as part of the Chivas Brothers acquisition. The brand dates to 1801 in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Ballantine's is another major Scotch whisky brand in the Pernod Ricard stable, the second-best-selling Scotch globally after Johnnie Walker.
Malibu coconut rum, Kahlua coffee liqueur, and Beefeater gin round out the Pernod Ricard portfolio across key spirits categories.
Martell cognac gives Pernod Ricard presence in the French cognac category, competing directly with LVMH's Hennessy.
Brown-Forman: The American Independent
Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF.B) is a Louisville, Kentucky-based spirits company that is an outlier in this landscape: it remains family-controlled, with the Brown family holding approximately 42% of outstanding shares and the majority of voting power. Founded in 1870, Brown-Forman is one of the few remaining major spirits companies with founder-family oversight.
[Jack Daniel's](/brands/jack-daniels) is Brown-Forman's flagship brand and the best-selling American whiskey in the world. The brand is produced at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the oldest registered distillery in the United States (registered in 1866). Jack Daniel's generates approximately 60-65% of Brown-Forman's total revenue.
Woodford Reserve is Brown-Forman's premium bourbon brand and one of the fastest-growing bourbon labels in the US.
Old Forester is Brown-Forman's oldest bourbon brand, in production since 1870 and sold in the early days in sealed glass bottles to guarantee purity.
Finlandia vodka was part of Brown-Forman's portfolio until 2023, when the company sold it to the Altia-Arcus group.
LVMH and the Cognac Category
LVMH (Euronext Paris: MC), better known as the luxury goods conglomerate, controls the cognac category through its Wines and Spirits segment. [Hennessy](/brands/hennessy) is the world's best-selling cognac brand, accounting for approximately 40% of global cognac shipments. LVMH owns 66% of Moet Hennessy, with Diageo owning the remaining 34%. Moet & Chandon and Dom Perignon champagnes are also in this segment, alongside Veuve Clicquot and Krug.
The Private Players
Bacardi Limited is the world's largest privately held spirits company, headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda. Family-owned since its founding in Cuba in 1862, Bacardi controls the Bacardi rum brand, Grey Goose vodka (acquired in 2004 for approximately $2 billion), Patron tequila (acquired in 2018), Bombay Sapphire gin, and Dewar's Scotch whisky.
William Grant & Sons is a Scottish family-owned spirits company and the fourth-largest Scotch whisky producer globally. Its portfolio includes Glenfiddich (the world's best-selling single malt Scotch), The Balvenie, Monkey Shoulder, and Hendrick's Gin.
