Brands Boycotted for Who Owns Them

Brands Boycotted for Who Owns Them

Consumer boycotts have evolved. It is no longer just about what a brand did. It is about who owns the brand, what the parent company does, and where the profits flow. Social media has made ownership structures visible, and activist groups like BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) have created organised frameworks for targeting brands based on ownership.

We examined the most significant ownership-based boycotts of the past three years. What emerges is a pattern: boycotts triggered by franchisee actions, parent company political donations, founder behaviour, and geopolitical entanglements. Some forced ownership changes. Others generated headlines without moving sales.

McDonald's: The Israel Franchise Boycott

In October 2023, Israeli franchisee Alonyal, led by CEO Omri Padan, announced free meals for the Israeli military. Franchisees in Muslim-majority countries immediately distanced themselves. The boycott spread to Kuwait, Malaysia, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski blamed "misinformation" and called the boycott "disheartening." Q4 2023 sales were "meaningfully impacted" in overseas markets. By February 2024, the company reported a "disheartening" effect on sales in Middle Eastern countries and Muslim-majority nations including Malaysia and Indonesia.

In April 2024, McDonald's bought back all 225 Israeli restaurants from Alonyal. Franchisees in Arab countries pledged millions in aid to Gaza. The boycott did not force McDonald's to change ownership of the brand itself. It forced McDonald's to change ownership of the franchise.

Starbucks: The Union Lawsuit Backlash

Starbucks sued Workers United union after a pro-Palestinian post on social media. A boycott followed. Three consecutive quarters of declining global sales resulted. Thousands of workers were laid off in the Middle East. CEO Laxman Narasimhan cited "significant impact on traffic and sales."

Separately, the Starbucks Korea "Tank Day" scandal in 2026 added to the brand's controversy load in Asia. Police raided Starbucks Korea headquarters in August 2026. The CEO was fired. President Lee Jae Myung was "enraged" by the campaign, which launched on the anniversary of the Gwangju military massacre.

Estee Lauder: The Trump-Greenland Connection

Ronald Lauder, heir to the Estee Lauder fortune, influenced Trump's Greenland purchase idea. Danish corporate records link a company with a New York address tied to Lauder to Greenlandic ventures including luxury spring water and hydroelectric projects.

A Reddit boycott thread titled "Estee Lauder boycott" crossed 7,000 upvotes. Users compiled lists of more than 20 Estee Lauder brands: MAC, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, La Mer, Jo Malone London, Tom Ford Beauty, Aveda, Too Faced, Smashbox, Origins, and The Ordinary. Many consumers expressed shock, saying they were "unaware how consolidated the luxury beauty market really is."

Lauder gave $5 million to MAGA Inc in March 2025. The Estee Lauder Companies has a market capitalisation of approximately $41.5 billion. The Lauder family retains significant voting power despite being publicly traded. The boycott was framed as an ethical choice: "are we indirectly funding political agendas?"

Naturium: Founder's Israel Photos Spark Backlash

Susan Yara, Naturium's founder, posted Instagram photos apparently taken on a Tel Aviv beach. TikTok and Reddit boycott calls followed. Naturium was acquired by E.l.f. Beauty for $355 million in 2023. E.l.f. Beauty also faced backlash for a campaign with comedian Matt Rife, whose Netflix special included a domestic violence joke.

Creators offered alternatives: Abi Amé, a Palestinian-Jordanian brand, and Oui the People. But E.l.f. Beauty reported a 25% increase in annual net sales to $1.64 billion in 2026, with "particularly strong results" from Naturium and Rhode. Online controversy did not translate to sales impact.

Ben & Jerry's: The Reverse Boycott

In a unique twist, co-founder Ben Cohen is calling for a boycott of the parent company's other brands to pressure Magnum Ice Cream Company into selling Ben & Jerry's back. Cohen's "Free Ben & Jerry's" campaign targets Yasso, Breyers, Talenti, and Klondike.

"Consumers want to vote with their dollars," Cohen said. More than 130,000 people signed a petition urging Magnum to sell. But Unilever and Magnum have refused. Ben & Jerry's sales grew 9.2% in Q2 2026 despite the campaign. As a Wharton professor noted: "Most boycotts fail because people get distracted."

Burger King Russia: The Geopolitical Boycott

Burger King Russia remained open after the Ukraine invasion. The joint venture includes sanctioned VTB Bank. Restaurant Brands International claimed inability to close stores due to the joint venture structure. ICU, the Ukrainian investment firm, still held 35% despite claiming to have exited.

The Pandora Papers revealed offshore structuring through Cyprus, Guernsey, and the Seychelles. The contrast with McDonald's is stark. McDonald's sold and rebranded its Russian operations to "Vkusno & Tochka" within months because it corporately owned most of its restaurants. Burger King's joint venture structure trapped the brand.

The BDS Movement: Organised Ownership Targeting

The BDS movement was founded in 2005. It targets brands with direct or corporate complicity with Israel. The framework includes military support, business activities in Israel, and operations in occupied territories.

BDS has successfully pressured companies to change behaviour. SodaStream moved its factory from the West Bank to the Negev in 2013. Current targets include McDonald's, Starbucks, Domino's, Estee Lauder, Sabra, HP, and Puma.

The movement provides structured frameworks for ownership-based purchasing decisions, offering alternative product lists alongside boycott calls.

What This Means for Consumers

Ownership matters to a growing segment of consumers. Social media makes ownership structures visible in ways that were not possible a decade ago. Boycotts can force ownership changes, as McDonald's buying back the Israeli franchise showed. But they often do not impact sales, as E.l.f. Beauty and Naturium demonstrated.

The most effective boycotts target specific ownership actions, not general corporate identity. McDonald's boycott targeted a specific franchisee action. The Citizens Bank De-ICE campaign targeted a specific financing relationship. The Estee Lauder boycott targets a specific heir's political activities. Consumers are increasingly asking: "Where does my money go?"
