Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores was founded in 1964 when Tom and Judy Love leased their first service station in Watonga, Oklahoma. The company began with a single location and expanded gradually throughout Oklahoma and neighboring states.

In 1981, Love's opened its first travel stop on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas, catering to professional truck drivers and the motoring public. This marked the company's transition from a service station operator to a travel stop chain. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Love's expanded significantly across the United States, developing a reputation for clean facilities, quality food and beverage offerings, and 24-hour operations.

The company reached its 600th location in October 2022. Tom Love passed away on March 7, 2023, at age 85, having guided the company for 59 years from a single store to a network of more than 600 locations. Under his leadership, Love's expanded its services to include hot and fresh food items, truck care maintenance, warm showers, and alternative fuel options.

The Love's Family of Companies has grown to include businesses focused on truck maintenance (Speedco and Love's Truck Care), logistics, commodity supply, alternative energies, and financial services. In December 2025, Love's acquired three factoring companies: TBS Factoring Service, Saint John Capital, and Financial Carrier Services, expanding its Love's Financial Services division.

In 2025, Love's added 18 new locations and 1,408 truck parking spaces to its network, closing the year with 669 locations in 42 states. The company invested approximately $1 billion in capital expenditures, building 20 new stores and renovating 50 existing locations under its Strategic Remodel Initiative (SRI). Love's also installed EV chargers at locations in 13 states, including fast chargers in eight states, supported by $83 million in government grants awarded in 2024.
