About LineageOS Community

What is LineageOS Community?
LineageOS Community is the collective of volunteer developers and contributors who maintain the LineageOS operating system, a free and open-source Android-based custom ROM. The project is legally organized as LineageOS LLC, registered in Seattle, Washington. It is not a traditional company. There are no employees, no investors, and no commercial operations. The project was forked from CyanogenMod in December 2016.

Is LineageOS Community publicly traded?
No. LineageOS LLC is not a commercial company and has no stock listing. There are no shares, no investors, and no revenue model. The project is funded through community donations that cover server and infrastructure costs. No individual or organization holds equity in the project.

Who founded LineageOS?
LineageOS was founded by a group of CyanogenMod community contributors in December 2016, after Cyanogen Inc. shut down the original CyanogenMod project. The original CyanogenMod was created by Stefanie Jane, known online as "cyanogen" or "Kondik," in 2009. The LineageOS fork was a collective effort by the development community, not a single founder.

Where is LineageOS based?
LineageOS LLC is registered in Seattle, Washington, USA, at 1425 Broadway. This is a legal mailing address, not a development center. The project has no physical headquarters. Contributors work from their own locations around the world. The project's infrastructure is hosted on cloud servers funded by donations.

How is LineageOS governed?
LineageOS is governed by nine Project Directors, who are senior contributors elected from within the community. Most decisions require a majority of 5 out of 9 directors. Items of significant controversy require a super-majority of 6 out of 9. For legal matters, veto power is reserved for the LineageOS LLC owners. The governance rules are published in a directors working agreement on GitHub.

How is LineageOS funded?
LineageOS is funded entirely through community donations. These donations cover server costs, bandwidth, domain registration, and other infrastructure expenses. No contributor or director receives compensation. The project does not sell software, licenses, or services. There is no premium version or paid support tier.

Is LineageOS a company?
No. LineageOS is an open-source community project, not a company. LineageOS LLC exists as a legal entity to handle domain registration, infrastructure contracts, and legal matters, but it has no commercial operations. The project was deliberately structured this way after the commercialization of CyanogenMod through Cyanogen Inc. led to that project's shutdown in 2016.
