In 1927, Honeywell Heating Specialty merged with Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company, founded by Albert Butz in 1885, to form Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company. The combined company became a leading manufacturer of thermostats and temperature control systems for residential and commercial buildings.
Minneapolis-Honeywell expanded into industrial controls, aircraft instruments, and computing equipment through the mid-20th century. The company shortened its name to Honeywell Inc. in 1964. Through the 1960s and 1970s, Honeywell became a significant player in the mainframe computer market, competing with IBM, before eventually exiting the computer business in the 1980s.
In 1999, Honeywell merged with AlliedSignal Corporation, a diversified industrial company with major aerospace, automotive, and specialty chemicals businesses. The merged company took the Honeywell name and was headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey. The merger was intended to create a diversified industrial conglomerate with leading positions across multiple sectors.
