History of Energy Transfer LP
Energy Transfer was founded in 1996 by Kelcy Warren and Ray Davis as a small intrastate natural gas pipeline operator in Texas. Through more than two decades of aggressive acquisitions, it grew into one of the largest midstream companies in North America: notable transactions include the 2011 acquisition of Southern Union, the 2015 acquisition of Regency Energy Partners, the 2017 merger with Sunoco Logistics, the 2021 acquisition of Enable Midstream (approximately $7.2 billion), the November 2023 acquisition of Crestwood Equity Partners (approximately $7.1 billion), and the 2024 acquisition of WTG Midstream (approximately $3.25 billion), which expanded Permian gas gathering.
The affiliated Sunoco LP completed its approximately $7.3 billion acquisition of NuStar Energy in May 2024 and acquired Parkland Corporation, a major international fuel distributor and convenience retailer operating in 26 countries across the Americas, on October 31, 2025, adding the Burnaby Refinery and a 29 percent interest in the SARA refinery in Martinique. USA Compression acquired J-W Power Company on January 12, 2026.
Energy Transfer remains a central player in American natural gas and NGL logistics, exporting record NGL volumes from its Nederland and Marcus Hook terminals and pursuing Lake Charles LNG development.
