History of DXC Technology Company
DXC's lineage is the story of the IT outsourcing industry itself. Computer Sciences Corporation was founded in 1959 by Fletcher Jones and Roy Nutt, becoming one of the first software and services companies on the NYSE and a giant in government IT. Electronic Data Systems, founded by Ross Perot in 1962, invented the outsourcing model, was bought by General Motors in 1984, spun out in 1996, and acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2008.
The two lines merged in April 2017 when CSC combined with HPE's Enterprise Services division in a $9 billion separation-merger, creating a company of roughly 170,000 employees and $25 billion in combined revenue. The new entity took the name DXC Technology and listed on the NYSE under DXC.
The merger promised scale synergies but delivered a difficult first era: revenue declined for years as legacy outsourcing contracts shrank faster than new digital work grew, and the company divested pieces including its US public sector business, which became Perspecta and then part of Peraton.
Leadership turned over repeatedly. Raul Fernandez, a technology executive who is also vice chairman and co-owner of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, became interim CEO in December 2023 and permanent president and CEO in February 2024, steering the company toward an AI-first services model and smaller, steadier revenue base. Headquarters moved from Tysons to Ashburn, Virginia.
DXC Technology Company Sustainability & Ethics
The company publishes ESG reporting covering emissions, responsible AI development, workforce, and supply chain. Its scale in offshore delivery makes labor practices and employee transitions a recurring operational ethics topic.
As a services company, its direct environmental footprint is modest; the more relevant exposure is data security and responsible AI governance for the enterprise clients whose systems it runs.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
Multi-year revenue decline: Persistent revenue shrinkage since the 2017 merger is the defining scrutiny point; the company has been a recurring target of breakup or take-private speculation.
Workforce restructuring: Ongoing global workforce reductions as contracts automate and consolidate draw periodic local labor attention in delivery-center countries.
Government contract history: Predecessor CSC faced historical controversies over government IT contracts, part of the inherited record that shaped the US public sector divestiture.
