History of Builders FirstSource, Inc.
Builders FirstSource was formed in 1998 when JLL Partners acquired the building materials businesses of four regional companies and combined them into a Dallas-area platform. It grew through steady regional acquisitions before going public on NASDAQ in 2005.
The modern scale came from a run of transformative deals. In 2015 the company acquired ProBuild for $1.63 billion, nearly doubling revenue and making it the largest building materials supplier in the country. It bought the components operations of several regional players through the following years, then in 2021 made its largest move: acquiring BMC Stock Holdings for about $2.5 billion, adding ready-frame components, millwork, and the Ready-Frame installation services business.
In 2021 it also acquired WTS Paradigm, a construction software company, seeding the digital push that became BLS Digital and the myBLDR.com platform, which lets builders configure and order components online. Peter Jackson, previously COO, became President and CEO in January 2023, succeeding Dave Rush.
Results held up through the post-2022 housing downturn: single-family starts fell but the company's component manufacturing share cushioned the blow, and 2025 revenue ran near $16 billion with roughly $2 billion in EBITDA, generating heavy free cash flow that has funded consistent share repurchases.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
The company carries routine OSHA and environmental exposure typical of a large manufacturing and distribution footprint. No company-defining scandal or regulatory action is on record as of November 2026.
