BritBox was established against the backdrop of rising competition from American streaming services like Netflix, which prompted European public service broadcasters and media companies to collaborate rather than compete. The service was first launched in the United States on March 7, 2017, followed by a Canadian launch on February 14, 2018.
The streaming service reported 250,000 subscribers within a year of its US launch, demonstrating strong demand for British content among international audiences. By 2019, the North American platform had reached 650,000 subscribers, and in early 2020, US and Canadian subscribers surpassed 1 million users, growing to 1.5 million by October 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic.
A separately managed UK service was launched on November 7, 2019, with Reemah Sakaan, ITV's subscription video on demand Group Director, announcing that the North American service had reached profitability by December 2019. The UK service surpassed 500,000 subscribers by March 2021, meeting BritBox's UK target.
Throughout 2019 and 2020, BritBox expanded its content offerings with original productions, exclusive series, and enhanced curation. The service introduced features like themed collections, behind-the-scenes content, and programming from other British broadcasters including Channel 4 and Channel 5. This expansion included original BritBox productions that commissioned new British content specifically for the streaming platform.
In March 2022, ITV announced that its new ITVX streaming platform would include access to BritBox for British consumers, leading to the decision to shut down BritBox UK's standalone service on April 30, 2024, with all content moving to ITVX.
The most significant corporate change occurred in February 2024 when BBC Studios paid £255 million to acquire ITV's shares in BritBox International, making it a fully owned subsidiary under the BBC Studios Global Media & Streaming Division. This acquisition valued BritBox International at approximately £510 million and reflected the service's strong growth and profitability.
In May 2024, BritBox announced the closure of its South African operations on August 30, 2024, reflecting strategic prioritization of core markets and operational efficiency improvements.
