About SL Benfica (Member-Owned)

Who owns SL Benfica?
SL Benfica is owned by its approximately 230,000 registered members, who pay annual dues and democratically elect the club president every four years. The club is not owned by any individual, corporation, or investment group. The club holds the Guinness World Record for most paid-up members of any sports club. The professional football team's commercial rights are managed through Benfica SAD, a publicly traded company listed on Euronext Lisbon, in which the parent club retains a controlling stake.

Who is the president of Benfica?
Rui Costa, the former Portuguese international footballer, is the current president of SL Benfica. He was first elected in October 2021 and re-elected for a second four-year term in November 2025. His re-election platform included targets of EUR 500 million in revenue and EUR 100 million in debt reduction during his second term, along with the "Benfica District" redevelopment project.

How many league titles has Benfica won?
Benfica has won 38 Primeira Liga titles, making it the most successful football club in Portuguese history. The club has also won 2 European Cup trophies (1961 and 1962) and 26 Taca de Portugal titles. Benfica's golden era came in the 1960s under manager Bela Guttmann, led by Eusebio, who scored 473 goals in 440 appearances.

What is the Estadio da Luz?
The Estadio da Luz is Benfica's home stadium in Lisbon, Portugal, with a capacity of 64,642. Built for UEFA Euro 2004, it is one of the largest football stadiums in Europe. The "Benfica District" redevelopment project, approved by members in January 2026, will expand stadium facilities, add commercial spaces, and modernize infrastructure around the stadium.

Does Benfica have a youth academy?
Yes. Benfica operates the Caixa Futebol Campus in Seixal, one of the most productive youth academies in world football. The academy has produced players including Joao Felix (sold to Atletico Madrid for EUR 127 million), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Ruben Dias (sold to Manchester City for EUR 68 million), and Goncalo Ramos (sold to Paris Saint-Germain for EUR 65 million). The academy generates hundreds of millions of euros in transfer fees.

What is Benfica's revenue?
Benfica reported revenue of EUR 332.6 million for FY2024. Revenue is generated from broadcasting rights, matchday operations, player transfers, sponsorship and merchandising, and Benfica TV. President Rui Costa has set a target of EUR 500 million in revenue during his second term. The club's dependence on player sales for a significant portion of revenue creates variability year over year.

Is Benfica publicly traded?
The parent club is not publicly traded. However, Benfica SAD, the company that manages the professional football team's commercial rights, is listed on Euronext Lisbon under the ticker SLBEN. The member-owned parent club retains a controlling stake in Benfica SAD. This structure was created in 1998 under Portuguese law, which allows football clubs to spin off their professional teams into separate corporate entities.
