History of Ameriprise Financial, Inc.
John Tappan founded Investors Syndicate in Minneapolis in 1894 to sell certificates of deposit. The business evolved through Investors Diversified Services (IDS), building a national advisor force.
American Express acquired IDS in 1984, operating it as American Express Financial Advisors and later American Express Financial Corporation, and added the Columbia Management asset business and RiverSource insurance arms.
In September 2005 American Express spun the business off to shareholders as Ameriprise Financial, Inc., listing on the NYSE under AMP. The new company consolidated asset management under the Columbia Threadneedle name internationally and kept the Ameriprise brand for advice and protection.
Under Jim Cracchiolo — CEO since the spinoff — the company focused on the advice-led, fee-heavy model, growing assets to a record $1.7 trillion by year-end 2025 and building one of the industry's best returns on equity.
Ameriprise Financial, Inc. Sustainability & Ethics
