History of Ally Financial Inc.
Ally began in 1919 in New York as General Motors Acceptance Corporation, created to help GM dealers finance inventory and customers buy cars on installment. For most of the twentieth century GMAC was simply the largest and most important captive auto lender in the world.
The crisis of 2008-2009 reshaped everything. Mortgage losses at subsidiary Residential Capital required a federal rescue under TARP; GMAC became a bank holding company to qualify for aid, and the Treasury ended up with a majority stake. In May 2010 the company renamed itself Ally Financial, with the consumer banking arm already operating as Ally Bank since 2009.
The recovery decade was spent repaying the government (Treasury exited fully in 2014 when Ally went public on the NYSE), winding down ResCap, and building the direct bank. Michael Rhodes, a former TD Bank executive, succeeded Jeffrey Brown as CEO in 2024 and launched the "Focused. Forward." strategy in 2025: concentrate capital on the three core franchises and exit smaller businesses including the credit card portfolio sold to CardWorks and the mortgage lending unit.
Fiscal 2025 showed the strategy working: GAAP EPS of $2.37, adjusted EPS up 62% to $3.81, core ROTCE of 10.4%, and a resumption of share repurchases in the fourth quarter.
Ally Financial Inc. Sustainability & Ethics
Ally publishes an annual ESG report emphasizing financial inclusion, community development, and its branch-free low-carbon model. Its "Do it Right" ethos is the stated cultural standard; the company runs CRA commitments typical of a large bank.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
2013 discrimination settlement: GMAC/Ally paid $98 million to resolve DOJ allegations of dealer markup discrimination against minority borrowers, the largest auto-finance fair-lending settlement of its era.
ResCap bankruptcy (2012): Residential Capital's Chapter 11 was the largest bank subsidiary failure of the crisis aftermath; resolved.
No new major regulatory action is on record as of November 2026.
