History of Albertsons Companies, Inc.
Joe Albertson opened his first store in Boise, Idaho, in 1939, pioneering the modern supermarket format. The company grew steadily through the postwar decades into a major Western grocery chain. In 1999, Albertsons acquired American Stores, adding ACME, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, and Sav-on drug stores, briefly making it the largest US food and drug retailer.
Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management took Albertsons private in 2006, and in 2015 acquired Safeway for approximately $9.2 billion, forming the modern multi-banner structure. The combined company returned to public markets with a June 2020 IPO.
In October 2022, Kroger agreed to acquire Albertsons for $24.6 billion. The deal drew immediate opposition from the FTC, nine state attorneys general, labor unions, and consumer advocates, arguing the combination of the two largest supermarket operators would reduce competition and raise prices. After a federal court in Oregon granted a preliminary injunction in December 2024, and a parallel Washington state ruling, both companies terminated the merger on December 11, 2024. Albertsons then sued Kroger for the $600 million termination fee and additional damages, alleging Kroger failed to make sufficient divestiture efforts; the litigation resolved in subsequent proceedings.
Under CEO Susan Morris, appointed May 2025, Albertsons reset strategy around its "Customers for Life" platform, investments in digital and pharmacy growth, and the ACI Edge operating-model restructuring announced in July 2026 that consolidates 11 divisions into four regions.
