History of Moncler

  • Founded: 1952
  • Founders: René Ramillon, André Vincent

René Ramillon and André Vincent founded Moncler in the French Alpine town of Monestier-de-Clermont. The name is an abbreviation of that place. Early products included padded sleeping bags, tents, and quilted jackets for workers and mountaineers.

Technical credibility grew through mountain expeditions and outfitting relationships. Down garments that began as functional insulation became recognizable fashion products over time. The company changed ownership several times before Ruffini took control in 2003 and moved its strategic center to Italy.

Ruffini narrowed distribution, raised quality and prices, opened directly operated stores, and positioned the down jacket as a luxury object. Moncler expanded into ready-to-wear, knitwear, footwear, and accessories without abandoning outerwear as its signature.

The Moncler Genius project, launched in 2018, invited designers to reinterpret the brand through rotating collaborations. Genius helped Moncler create frequent cultural moments rather than relying only on conventional seasonal collections. The company later developed Moncler Grenoble as a clearer mountain-performance and luxury-ski expression.
