The brand began in 1930 when Norman A. Markel founded the Mutual Casualty Insurance Company in Norfolk, Virginia, to insure trucking risks that standard carriers would not touch. That founding habit, writing the unusual risks others decline, became the entire identity of the brand.
Second-generation leader Alan Markel expanded into niche lines through the postwar decades, and the third generation took the company public in 1986. Specialty acquisitions built the portfolio: Terra Nova in 2000 brought the Lloyd's of London platform, Alterra Capital in 2012 scaled the business significantly, and State National in 2018 added fronting and program services.
The brand's product range now spans classic cars and racehorses, small business packages, professional liability, excess and surplus lines, marine, and programs. In 2025 the insurance business posted a 95% combined ratio and 4% revenue growth inside a group that delivered $15.5 billion in operating revenues.
