History of lululemon

  • Founded: 1998
  • Founders: Chip Wilson

Chip Wilson founded lululemon in Vancouver in 1998 after identifying yoga as a growing athletic and cultural movement. The first store opened in Kitsilano and functioned partly as a community space. Local instructors acted as ambassadors, and in-store classes helped the young business build trust without relying on conventional mass advertising.

Technical women's yoga pants became the signature product. Fabrics, flattering construction, and premium pricing differentiated lululemon from both traditional sporting-goods companies and fashion retailers. The company expanded through North America and completed its IPO in 2007.

The brand faced a major quality crisis in 2013 when some Luon pants were recalled for excessive sheerness. The episode led to leadership changes and closer attention to quality control. Public comments by Wilson also created criticism and contributed to his eventual departure from the board.

During the late 2010s and 2020s, lululemon expanded men's apparel, running, training, bags, personal care, and footwear. International growth, particularly in China, became increasingly important as growth in the Americas matured.

lululemon Sustainability & Ethics

lululemon does not own most factories producing its clothing. It sources through contract suppliers, with major manufacturing in Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, China, and Bangladesh. Outsourcing offers flexibility but creates oversight obligations for wages, working hours, safety, and purchasing practices.

The company has climate and preferred-material goals and reports progress through impact disclosures. At the same time, synthetic performance fabrics rely on fossil-fuel-derived inputs and can release microfibers. Consumers should distinguish corporate targets from independently verified product-level claims.
