History of King's InterHigh

  • Founded: 2004
  • Founders: InterHigh (original founding 2004)
  • Acquired by Inspired Education Group: 2021

The history of King's InterHigh begins with the founding of InterHigh in 2004 as one of the United Kingdom's first online secondary schools. InterHigh was established to provide flexible, accredited British secondary education to students who could not attend traditional schools due to health conditions, geographic location, family circumstances, or other reasons. The school offered GCSE and A-Level qualifications through a fully online platform, allowing students to study from home or any location with internet access.

InterHigh grew steadily during the 2000s and 2010s as broadband internet connectivity expanded and online learning platforms improved. The school developed a reputation for providing British secondary education in a flexible online environment. InterHigh's student body included students in the United Kingdom as well as international students seeking British qualifications from overseas.

In 2016, InterHigh was acquired by Wey Education PLC, a UK company that listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange (AIM: WEY) to fund its expansion in online education. Under Wey Education's ownership, InterHigh continued to grow enrollment and expand program offerings. Wey Education also operated Academy21, an online school focused on alternative provision education for students unable to attend mainstream schools.

King's College Online was a separate online school within Inspired Education Group's portfolio, offering British secondary education qualifications to students globally. Inspired had been expanding its premium private schools portfolio since its founding in 2013, acquiring schools across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

In May 2021, Inspired Education Group acquired Wey Education PLC for approximately 23 million pounds, bringing InterHigh and Academy21 into the Inspired portfolio. The acquisition marked Inspired's strategic move into online education, complementing its existing portfolio of physical premium private schools. Wey Education was delisted from AIM following the acquisition.

In November 2021, Inspired merged InterHigh and King's College Online to create King's InterHigh. The merger combined the student bodies, faculty, and platforms of both schools into a single online school brand with enhanced resources and a broader program offering. The King's InterHigh brand leverages the heritage of the King's College name, which has a 50-year history in international education, while incorporating InterHigh's 17 years of online schooling experience.

King's InterHigh received accreditation under the UK Department for Education's Online Education Accreditation Scheme (OEAS). The OEAS was established to quality-assure online schools operating in the UK. The accreditation confirms that King's InterHigh meets the standards required for a quality online school, providing assurance to students and families about the school's educational quality.

The school serves students from age 7 (Year 3) through age 19 (Year 13), covering primary and secondary education. King's InterHigh offers the UK national curriculum, including Key Stage 2 (primary), Key Stage 3 (lower secondary), GCSE and IGCSE qualifications (upper secondary), and A-Level qualifications (sixth form). The school's qualifications are recognized by universities and employers in the United Kingdom and internationally.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online learning globally. King's InterHigh benefited from increased awareness and acceptance of online education as a viable alternative to traditional schooling. The pandemic demonstrated that high-quality education could be delivered effectively online, reducing the stigma previously associated with online schooling and expanding the potential market for King's InterHigh's services. Enrollment grew significantly during and after the pandemic as families sought flexible education options.

In 2026, Inspired announced the Edge Academy, an AI-enabled primary school teaching model scheduled for international rollout in 2027. King's InterHigh is expected to implement the Edge Academy model, which uses AI to personalize learning and support teachers in online instruction. Inspired also announced the Nsouli Scholars Programme, a global scholarship initiative providing fully-funded places at Inspired schools, including King's InterHigh.

King's InterHigh Sustainability & Ethics

King's InterHigh operates within Inspired Education Group's sustainability framework. As an online school, King's InterHigh's environmental footprint is primarily associated with digital infrastructure including data centers, server energy consumption, and device usage by students and staff. The school does not operate physical campuses, which eliminates the environmental impact of school buildings, transportation, and physical resource consumption associated with traditional schools.

Inspired has committed to integrating sustainability education across its curriculum. King's InterHigh incorporates environmental and social responsibility topics into its curriculum where appropriate. However, King's InterHigh does not hold independent sustainability certifications.

The Nsouli Scholars Programme, announced in 2026, provides fully-funded places at Inspired schools including King's InterHigh. The program is designed to broaden access to premium education for talented students who cannot afford tuition fees. This is Inspired's most significant social responsibility initiative.

King's InterHigh's premium pricing limits accessibility to affluent families. This is a structural characteristic of the premium online school market. The Nsouli Scholars Programme partially addresses this accessibility concern.

Student data privacy and digital safety are significant ethical considerations for an online school. King's InterHigh implements cybersecurity measures, digital citizenship education, and student protection protocols. The school complies with UK data protection regulations including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as applied in the UK.

Awards & Recognition

King's InterHigh has received limited formal awards from independent third parties. The school's recognition comes primarily from its OEAS accreditation and its position within Inspired Education Group's portfolio.

The school holds accreditation under the UK Department for Education's Online Education Accreditation Scheme (OEAS). This accreditation is a formal recognition that King's InterHigh meets the standards required for a quality online school operating in the UK. The OEAS accreditation process involves evaluation of curriculum, teaching standards, student support, safeguarding, and governance.

As part of Inspired Education Group, King's InterHigh benefits from Inspired's membership in educational organizations including the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). COBIS sets standards for British international schools and conducts regular inspections.

The InterHigh legacy (dating to 2004) gives King's InterHigh a claim to being one of the UK's longest-running online schools. This longevity provides credibility in the online education market, where many competitors have been established more recently.

King's InterHigh Recalls & Controversies

King's InterHigh has not been subject to regulatory actions, safety recalls, or significant public controversies. As an online school, the concept of product recalls does not apply. However, the brand faces several challenges and considerations:

Online Education Quality Concerns: Online schooling faces inherent questions about educational quality compared to traditional in-person education. Critics of online schooling cite the lack of face-to-face social interaction, reduced extracurricular opportunities, and the need for high self-discipline from students. King's InterHigh addresses these concerns through live interactive lessons, online community building, and structured timetabling, but the fundamental limitations of online education remain a consideration for families evaluating the school.

Premium Pricing and Accessibility: King's InterHigh charges premium tuition fees reflecting its positioning within the Inspired Education Group portfolio. Specific fee information is available from the school's website. The premium pricing limits accessibility to affluent families and creates concerns about educational exclusivity. The Nsouli Scholars Programme partially addresses this concern through fully-funded scholarships.

Technology Infrastructure Requirements: Online schooling requires reliable internet connectivity and compatible devices. Students in locations with limited connectivity or families without appropriate technology face barriers to access. King's InterHigh's global reach is constrained by technology infrastructure availability in some regions.

Student Data Privacy: As an online school handling student data across multiple jurisdictions, King's InterHigh must comply with varying data protection regulations. The school implements cybersecurity measures and complies with UK GDPR. However, the concentration of student data in digital systems creates inherent privacy risks that require ongoing management.

Teacher Recruitment and Retention: Online teaching requires specific skills including digital pedagogy, online engagement techniques, and technology proficiency. King's InterHigh faces competition for qualified teachers from both traditional schools and other online education providers. Inspired's global network and teacher training programs help address this challenge.

Wey Education PLC Legacy: Before Inspired's acquisition in 2021, Wey Education PLC (InterHigh's parent company) faced some criticism from shareholders regarding financial performance and growth strategy. The delisting of Wey Education following Inspired's acquisition resolved these issues, but the pre-acquisition history is part of King's InterHigh's corporate heritage.
