History of Hytale

  • Founded: 2015
  • Founders: Simon Collins-Laflamme, Philippe Touchette

Hytale originated from the Hypixel Minecraft server, one of the most popular Minecraft multiplayer servers in the world. Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette co-founded the Hypixel server in 2013, and it grew to attract over 24 million unique players. The server offered custom game modes, minigames, and community features built within Minecraft's engine.

In 2018, Collins-Laflamme and Touchette established Hypixel Studios to develop an original game that would build on the creative sandbox concepts refined through years of Minecraft server development. The studio began work on Hytale, a voxel-based sandbox adventure game with its own engine, designed to offer the creative freedom of Minecraft with significantly more advanced graphics, animation, and gameplay systems.

The Hytale announcement trailer, released in December 2018, became a viral sensation. The trailer accumulated over 55 million views on YouTube and generated enormous excitement in the gaming community. The trailer showcased features including a narrative adventure mode, extensive modding tools, a built-in model maker for custom content, and large procedurally generated worlds.

Riot Games acquired Hypixel Studios in April 2020, providing financial backing and publishing infrastructure. Under Riot's ownership, the studio grew significantly and began developing two engines simultaneously: the Legacy Engine (C# and Java based) and a Cross-platform Engine (C++ based) intended to support mobile and console releases.

Development took longer than anticipated. The dual-engine approach divided resources and created technical complexity. By 2024, the team had not released the game, and community frustration grew over the extended timeline and limited communication.

On June 23, 2025, Riot Games announced the cancellation of Hytale and the wind-down of Hypixel Studios. The decision came after approximately five years of development under Riot's ownership and significant investment. The cancellation shocked the gaming community, given the game's massive anticipation and the resources already committed.

In November 2025, the original founders reacquired Hytale and Hypixel Studios from Riot Games. The founders rehired approximately 30 developers and committed to personally funding the studio for 10 years without external investors. The team decided to return to the Legacy Engine rather than continue with the Cross-platform Engine, allowing for faster development by leveraging existing work rather than starting over.

Hytale entered early access in January 2026. The early access release focuses on the core sandbox and adventure gameplay built on the Legacy Engine, with plans to expand content and features through regular updates. The game is free-to-play, supported by cosmetic microtransactions.

About Hypixel Studios

What does Hypixel Studios own?

The Hypixel Minecraft server, which the founders also created, is operated by Hypixel Inc., a separate entity from Hypixel Studios.

Is Hypixel Studios publicly traded?
No. Hypixel Studios is a privately held company. Following the November 2025 repurchase from Riot Games, the studio is owned entirely by the founding team with no external investors or publishers. The company has no plans for an IPO or public listing.

Who founded Hypixel Studios?
Hypixel Studios was founded in 2018 by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, who had previously created the Hypixel Minecraft server in 2013. The server became one of the most popular Minecraft servers in the world, and the founders established Hypixel Studios to develop a standalone game, Hytale, that was not constrained by Minecraft's platform.

Where is Hypixel Studios headquartered?
Hypixel Studios is headquartered in Derry, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The company also maintains operations in Canada. The Derry location provides access to talent from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, while the Canadian office provides access to North American game development talent.

How many brands does Hypixel Studios own?
Hypixel Studios owns one brand: Hytale, a block-based sandbox game currently in development. The company is a single-project studio and does not operate a portfolio of multiple games. The Hypixel Minecraft server is operated by Hypixel Inc., a separate entity.

Who owns Hypixel Studios?
Hypixel Studios is owned entirely by its founding team, led by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette. The founders repurchased the company and the Hytale IP from Riot Games in November 2025. The studio operates with a 10-year personal funding commitment from the founders, with no external investors, publishers, or corporate parent.

What is Hytale?
Hytale is a block-based sandbox game that combines building, exploration, combat, and adventure gameplay. It is being developed by the team behind the Hypixel Minecraft server. The game features a block-based construction system, procedurally generated worlds, multiplayer support, and modding tools. It is planned for release on PC, Mac, and Linux at a price of approximately $19.99, with console releases considered for later.

Why was Hytale cancelled and then revived?
Hytale was cancelled in June 2025 after over 10 years of development, with the team citing the project's overly ambitious scope. In November 2025, the original team repurchased the game from Riot Games with a 10-year personal funding commitment and resumed development independently. The team stated that the independent structure allows them to set their own pace and priorities without publisher pressure.

Hytale Sustainability & Ethics

Hypixel Studios operates as a small, independent studio by design. The founders have explicitly stated that maintaining a manageable team size supports better work-life balance and avoids the crunch culture that plagues many game development studios. This approach represents an ethical stance on labor practices in an industry known for excessive overtime and burnout.

The studio's transparency about development challenges, engine changes, and realistic timelines has been noted by the gaming community as a positive example of honest communication. The founders have openly discussed the technical debt inherited from the Riot Games period and the work required to address it.

Hytale's digital-only distribution eliminates physical media waste and transportation emissions associated with retail product distribution. The game's server infrastructure, which supports multiplayer gameplay, consumes energy, but the environmental impact is typical of online games and is managed through cloud hosting providers.

The game's commitment to modding support and community-run servers represents a sustainable approach to game longevity. By enabling players to create and host their own content, Hytale reduces the need for constant official content production while extending the game's lifespan through community contributions.

Hytale Recalls & Controversies

The cancellation of Hytale by Riot Games on June 23, 2025 was the most significant controversy in the game's history. Riot's decision came after approximately five years of development and significant financial investment. The cancellation affected dozens of developers who lost their jobs and raised questions about Riot's commitment to projects outside its core League of Legends and Valorant franchises.

The extended development timeline has been a source of community frustration since the game's 2018 announcement. The gap between the viral trailer and the actual release spanned over seven years, leading to skepticism about whether the game could deliver on its initial promises. The early access release in January 2026 confirmed that the final product is smaller in scope than what the 2018 trailer suggested.

The dual-engine development strategy during Riot's ownership has been criticized as a misallocation of resources. Developing both the Legacy Engine and the Cross-platform Engine simultaneously divided the team and created technical complexity that contributed to delays. The eventual abandonment of the Cross-platform Engine in favor of returning to the Legacy Engine meant that years of work on the C++ engine were set aside.

Community trust has been affected by periods of limited communication during development. Long stretches without updates, particularly in 2023 and 2024, led to speculation about the project's status and frustration among supporters. The founders have acknowledged these communication failures and committed to more regular updates following the reacquisition.

The transition from Riot Games' corporate ownership to independent founder control has been generally well-received by the community, but it also means the project operates with significantly fewer resources. The smaller team and limited budget may constrain the scope and speed of development compared to what was possible under Riot's backing.
