History of Enterprise Products

  • Founded: 1968
  • Founders: Dan L. Duncan

The brand began in 1968 when Dan Duncan started a Houston business selling natural gas liquids door-to-door with two trucks. The name has remained constant as the company scaled from a regional NGL trucker into the largest publicly traded energy partnership in the United States.

Through the 1970s and 1980s the Enterprise name spread across Texas and Louisiana as Duncan bought pipelines and processing plants, often assets the majors no longer wanted. The partnership went public in 1998, and the 2004 GulfTerra merger made the brand synonymous with Gulf Coast midstream infrastructure.

The shale revolution redefined the brand's meaning. Starting in the late 2000s, Enterprise built the fractionation, pipeline, and dock capacity that turned it into America's leading NGL and ethane exporter, pioneering the first U.S. ethane export cargoes in 2016. Enterprise's Mont Belvieu complex became the pricing center of the U.S. NGL market.

Under co-CEOs Jim Teague and Randy Fowler, the brand's recent identity is export and volume growth. FY2025 closed with ten operational records in the fourth quarter alone, including 8.1 billion cubic feet per day of gas processing inlet and 14.1 million barrels per day-equivalent of pipeline volumes, plus the 27th straight annual distribution increase.

About Enterprise Products Partners L.P.

What does Enterprise Products own?
Enterprise owns more than 50,000 miles of pipelines, the Mont Belvieu NGL fractionation complex, natural gas processing plants, roughly 14 billion cubic feet of gas storage, over 300 million barrels of liquids storage, and Gulf Coast export terminals including the Enterprise Hydrocarbon Terminal and ethane export docks.

Is Enterprise Products publicly traded?
Yes. Enterprise Products Partners trades on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker EPD. It is structured as a master limited partnership, so investors buy common units and receive K-1 tax forms rather than holding corporate shares.

Who founded Enterprise Products?
Dan L. Duncan founded Enterprise in Houston in 1968, starting with two trucks selling natural gas liquids. He built it into one of America's largest energy infrastructure businesses before his death in 2010, and his family's entities retain control of the general partner.

Where is Enterprise Products headquartered?
Enterprise Products Partners is headquartered in Houston, Texas, where it was founded. Its operational center of gravity is the Texas Gulf Coast, including the Mont Belvieu complex east of Houston and export terminals on the Houston Ship Channel.

How many brands does Enterprise Products own?
Enterprise operates under a single master brand rather than a portfolio of consumer names. Its facilities and joint ventures carry the Enterprise identity, including the Mont Belvieu complex, Enterprise Hydrocarbon Terminal, and the SPOT export project.

Who owns Enterprise Products Partners?
Public unitholders own the limited partner interests, while control of the general partner, Enterprise Products Holdings LLC, rests with entities tied to the Duncan family. Jim Teague and Randy Fowler serve as co-chief executives of the general partner.
