Clarence Birdseye was an American inventor and naturalist who developed a commercial quick-freeze method for preserving food while working as a fur trapper in Labrador, Canada, around 1912 and 1917. He observed that fish caught in the extreme Arctic cold and frozen almost instantly retained a fresher taste and texture than fish frozen slowly through conventional methods. Birdseye spent years refining this observation into a practical, mechanized flash-freezing process suitable for mass production.
In 1924, Birdseye founded General Seafood Corporation in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to commercialize his freezing technology. He patented the multi-plate quick-freezing machine that became the technical foundation of the modern frozen food industry. In 1929, the Postum Company, a food conglomerate that would soon rename itself General Foods Corporation, purchased Birdseye's patents and business for approximately $22 million, an enormous sum for the era. General Foods launched frozen vegetables, fruit, fish, and meat under the Birds Eye brand name starting in 1930, initially in a small number of test market cities because household freezers were not yet widespread.
Frozen food adoption grew slowly through the 1930s due to the scarcity of home freezers and dedicated frozen food retail cases, but expanded rapidly after World War II as supermarket freezer cases and home refrigerator-freezers became standard. Birds Eye became one of the most recognized brand names in the emerging frozen food category during the 1950s and 1960s, a period when General Foods invested heavily in advertising frozen vegetables, fish sticks, and TV dinners.
General Foods sold the Birds Eye brand's US business multiple times in later decades as the frozen food conglomerate landscape shifted. Dean Foods acquired the domestic Birds Eye business in 1993. Agrilink Foods, later renamed Birds Eye Foods, took over operations in the mid-2000s, and Birds Eye Foods was itself acquired by Pinnacle Foods in 2009. Conagra Brands then acquired Pinnacle Foods, and with it the US and Canadian Birds Eye business, for $10.9 billion in October 2018.
The brand's international rights followed a separate path. Unilever had owned the Birds Eye trademark across the United Kingdom and continental Europe for decades before selling its European frozen foods division, including Birds Eye and Iglo, to private equity firm Permira in 2006. Permira's holding company, later organized as the Iglo Group, was acquired by Nomad Foods in 2015 through a reverse-merger transaction led by Martin Franklin and Noam Gottesman, giving Nomad Foods control of Birds Eye across the UK, Italy, Germany, and other European markets. Nomad Foods has since expanded its European frozen food portfolio through additional acquisitions, including Findus in 2018 and Fortenova's frozen food business in 2022.
