History of Signature Aviation

Signature Aviation's origins trace back to 1879, when William Fenton and Walter Wilson Cobbett established a small belting works in Dundee, Scotland. Fenton was a weaving manager who had developed a solid twill woven belt for driving machinery while working at a Swedish textile mill. Cobbett was a merchant distributor who handled sales and marketing. The partnership was formed with a simple handshake during a chance encounter in Sweden.

The company's initial product was solid woven belting used for power transmission and conveying in mining and other industries. Fenton named his invention "Scandinavia belting." In 1911, the business established a new base in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, and was renamed Scandinavia Belting Limited. In 1925, the company became British Belting and Asbestos Limited. The name BBA originated from this period.

During World War II, the company produced materials for British military aircraft, including the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, and Hawker Typhoon. This wartime work marked the company's first significant involvement in aviation.

In 1967, the company was renamed BBA Group, reflecting its diversification beyond belting and asbestos products. Through the 1970s and 1980s, BBA Group expanded through acquisitions into automotive components, industrial materials, and aviation. In 1986, BBA Group made its first major move into aviation by acquiring APPH, a UK-based landing gear and hydraulics business, along with a similar business in the United States.

The 1990s saw BBA Group increasingly orient toward aviation services. The company acquired Signature Flight Support, building what would become the world's largest FBO network for business and general aviation. Non-aviation businesses were progressively divested.

In November 2006, BBA Group completed the demerger of Fiberweb plc, its nonwoven materials business. The remaining company was renamed BBA Aviation plc and became a focused aviation support and aftermarket services provider, listed on the London Stock Exchange under ticker BBAV.

In November 2019, BBA Aviation plc rebranded as Signature Aviation plc, aligning the corporate name with its largest business, Signature Flight Support. The company also divested non-core businesses, including the sale of its engine repair and overhaul business for $230 million in February 2021.

In June 2021, the Blackstone-GIP-Cascade consortium completed the takeover, taking Signature Aviation private. The company was delisted from the London Stock Exchange. In January 2022, Tony Lefebvre was appointed CEO, having served as interim CEO since the June 2021 acquisition. Michael Friisdahl was appointed Executive Chairman.

As of 2026, Signature Aviation operates over 200 FBO locations across 27 countries on five continents. The company describes itself as an "aviation hospitality" business, providing fueling, ground handling, hangarage, passenger and pilot services, and aircraft management.

Awards & Recognition

  • EPA Green Power Leadership Award (2024): CEO Tony Lefebvre received this award from the US Environmental Protection Agency for Signature's investments in renewable energy and sustainable aviation fuel distribution.
  • Great Place to Work Certification (2025): Signature Aviation earned Great Place to Work certification, recognizing employee satisfaction and workplace culture.
  • Living Legends of Aviation Lifetime Aviation Industry Award: Tony Lefebvre received this award for his contributions to the aviation industry over a 30-year career.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

Signature Aviation has not been subject to specific product recalls or major regulatory enforcement actions publicly reported as of August 2026. The company operates under FAA, EASA, and other aviation regulatory authority certifications for its FBO and ground handling operations.

The 2021 takeover process generated some controversy. The bidding war involved multiple parties, with Blackstone and Cascade initially bidding $5.17 per share, GIP countering at $5.50, and the final consortium bid reaching $5.62. Some shareholders argued the final price undervalued the company given its recovery potential post-pandemic. The board ultimately recommended the consortium offer.

The company's divestiture of its engine repair and overhaul business in 2021 for $230 million reduced the company's aftermarket service capabilities, focusing it exclusively on FBO operations. Some industry analysts questioned whether this narrowed the company's revenue diversification.

Signature Aviation Ownership: Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • +World's largest FBO network with over 200 locations creates competitive advantages through network effects and customer loyalty
  • +Business aviation market growth post-pandemic has driven increased fuel volumes and service demand

Considerations

  • -Private ownership means limited financial transparency compared to the company's former public listing on the London Stock Exchange
  • -Revenue concentration in fuel sales makes the company sensitive to jet fuel price fluctuations and flying activity levels
  • -The FBO market is fragmented, with competition from independent operators and other networks at individual airports
  • -Economic downturns disproportionately affect business aviation, as private jet travel is discretionary for most users
  • -The 2021 divestiture of engine repair and overhaul reduced revenue diversification
