History of Raptive, Inc.
The corporate lineage begins with the CafeMedia business that launched women's lifestyle web properties starting in 2007, co-founded by Michael Sanchez and Andrew Shue with venture backing from Highland Capital Partners and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. As programmatic advertising matured, CafeMedia pivoted from operating content sites to monetizing them, and by 2014 it had become a specialist in programmatic ad management.
AdThrive was founded separately in 2013 by Andy and Kelly Marzka, growing out of Andy's experiments optimizing ads on Kelly's blog. It scaled from 2 million to 63 million monthly unique visitors within about a year by offering free, full-service ad optimization to lifestyle bloggers, becoming the dominant service in the food, home, parenting, and DIY categories.
CafeMedia acquired AdThrive in September 2016, merging two complementary models: CafeMedia's programmatic infrastructure and AdThrive's high-touch publisher service. In 2018 the combined company sold its owned-and-operated content sites to focus exclusively on external creators. It acquired audience-engagement startup Slickstream in October 2022 and passed $2 billion in cumulative creator payouts in early 2023, recruiting a new sales leadership team under Marla Newman.
On April 19, 2023 the company retired the CafeMedia, AdThrive, and CafeMedia Ad Management names and rebranded as Raptive, reframing itself as a creator company rather than an ad network. Post-rebrand growth accelerated: the network surpassed 6,300 sites by December 2025, adding more than 1,000 sites that year with 85 percent switching from competing ad managers. Cumulative creator payouts reached $3.6 billion, and the company topped Jounce Media's 2025 trust ranking among sales houses.
Raptive, Inc. Sustainability & Ethics
Raptive's central social claim is economic sustainability for independent creators. Its advocacy work covers publisher rights in the AI era, industry traffic quality standards, and support for human-created content. It enforces content and traffic standards across its exclusive network and maintains brand-safety curation for advertisers.
The company's stance against AI-generated content displacement is both an ethical position and a commercial one, since its business depends on the viability of independent publishing.
Awards & Recognition
Raptive topped Jounce Media's 2025 sentiment report as the most trusted sales house, beating its closest competitors by more than 20 percentage points. Its network holds a Comscore top 10 digital media property ranking, unique for a company with no owned editorial content. Predecessor entities appeared on the Inc. 5000 and industry growth lists.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
Raptive has not faced significant regulatory action. Market scrutiny focuses on the standard economics of exclusive ad management: revenue-share terms, lock-in effects, and ad density on creator sites. The broader industry debate over AI's impact on publisher traffic is the arena where the company is most publicly engaged.
