Pandora's origins trace back to 2000 when Will Glaser, Jon Kraft, and Tim Westergren founded the company as Savage Beast Technologies. Glaser had conceptualized the Music Genome Project, an innovative system for classifying music by various traits and attributes.
Initially, the company pitched its technology as an e-commerce recommendation engine for retailers like AOL Music and Best Buy. However, after the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, the company shifted focus to licensing its technology and eventually developing a consumer-facing internet radio service.
The company faced significant financial challenges, running through its initial $2 million in funding by 2001. In a remarkable display of commitment, the founders convinced 50 employees to work for two years without pay, though this later led to a lawsuit over deferred salaries that violated California labor laws.
In 2004, Walden Venture Capital led an $8 million funding round, and the company hired Joe Kennedy, formerly of automaker Saturn, as CEO. This investment and leadership change helped pivot the company toward developing Pandora as an internet radio service using the Music Genome Project.
Pandora officially launched in August 2005 as a subscription-based service, later adding a free, ad-supported version in November 2005 after realizing users were creating multiple email addresses to extend free trials.
The company went public in 2011 on the New York Stock Exchange, reaching 80 million users with 800,000 tracks from 80,000 artists. By 2013, Pandora accounted for 70% of all internet radio listening in the United States.
Growth continued through the 2010s, with the introduction of Pandora Plus subscription service in 2016 and expansion into podcasts under CEO Roger Lynch in 2017. However, the company discontinued services in Australia and New Zealand in 2017 to focus on the U.S. market.
In January 2019, following regulatory approval, SiriusXM completed its acquisition of Pandora for $3.5 billion, integrating the service into its broader audio entertainment ecosystem.
