1Password was founded in 2005 by Dave Teare and Roustem Karimov, along with their respective partners Sara Teare and Natalia Karimov. The company began as AgileBits Inc., with 1Password developed as a solution to the growing problem of managing multiple passwords across different websites and applications.
The company operated as a bootstrapped business for 14 years, growing organically through product development and customer acquisition. During this period, 1Password built a loyal user base and established itself as a premium password manager known for its security and user-friendly interface.
The major turning point came in November 2019 when 1Password announced a partnership with Accel, which invested $200 million in a Series A funding round. This was the first outside funding in the company's history and the largest single investment Accel had made at that time.
In 2021, 1Password acquired SecretHub, a Dutch cybersecurity company, and raised an additional $100 million at a $2 billion valuation. The company continued its expansion in 2022 with the acquisition of Passage, a Texas-based passkey tool provider.
The most significant funding event occurred in January 2022 when 1Password raised $620 million in a Series C round led by Iconiq Growth, increasing the company's valuation to $6.8 billion. This round was the largest in Canadian history and brought in celebrity investors.
By September 2023, 1Password had surpassed $250 million in annual recurring revenue, with two-thirds coming from business customers. In November 2025, CEO David Faugno announced that the company had exceeded $400 million in ARR and was considering an IPO in 2026 or 2027.
